Western Digital adds 120GB model to Passport mini storage

More good laptop news: The function of a notebook in traditional desktop environments is very common now, but there are still some huge limiting factors, especially storage capacity. Last year, notebook drives got a much needed space upgrade, a whopping 120GB. Produce small storage, and you produce smaller portable storage, for sure. Western Digital is using their reference 120GB model to make an addition to their Passport external storage devices. The “Scorpio” line of drives are WD's notebook drives, which peak at 120GB now. The newer Passports now feature the 120GB Scorpio, can run completely off USB power, and are in a fairly tiny compartment, perfect for putting in your pocket.

I use a portable laptop drive every day, whether at work or at home – the advantage of having massive capacity in your hands wherever you go is incredible, especially if you do a lot of file transferring or data recovery. The new Passport will retail around $200, which is not all that much more considering the price of other 120GB drives. Of course, you could just buy your own external chassis to slip a drive into, and probably save a bit of cash.

$200? No that's not bad at all, for a notebook. here's what i got on google...

So, really, that's a good upgrade, from one of the best companies, for a very acceptable price.

I’ve been turned off to Western Digital, ever since their early Caviars came out. I had a drive that was working fine, and then it started clicking, and eventually died. I thought, “this is probably just an anomaly,” and I bought another Caviar. Guess what happened: it started clicking and died. Since then, I’ve been going between Maxtor and Seagate, and I’ve never had a problem. Too much brand loyalty can be a bad thing, I guess. Back to the topic, I thought laptop HDDs would be much larger by now, 120 GB just seems so wimpy. I know it would take some work, but why not develop a new standard for their physical sizes? 2.5” is probably a great limiting factor here.

Sounds like a great little upgrade for the existing laptops out there. This would go great with the new ATI card. Laptops seem to be redeeming themselves in the eyes of the gamers.

Nice.......I've considered storage a weak point in laptops for some time now, so adding 20 gigs of capacity to the product line is indeed good news.
With WD incorporating features of it's new 500 gig desktop hard drives into the Scorpio, such as the WhisperDrive and SoftSeek technologies, it should be quiet and durable. (I've used a variety of WD drives the past few years, and never experienced problems)
In addition to back-ups and files, having the extra capacity for video editing, music, and games will be very handy.
I was hoping that for $200, it would include the pocket-sized shock-absorbing case, since that's a must-have.
It's also cool that WD has a special power adapter available for laptops with limited bus power.
