Peter Jackson to create Xbox games

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has been given the opportunity to create new games for Microsoft, including a new instalment of the Halo series. Jackson will work with Fran Walsh to create many new key titles for Microsoft, including two new "interactive entertainment series" for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. Jackson and Walsh are already executive producers on a film version of Halo.

Together, Jackson, Walsh and Microsoft Game Studios will establish Wingnut Interactive - a New Zealand-based studio "dedicated to the creation of world-class interactive entertainment." Jackson believes that new technology available will allow them to express themselves creatively in a whole new way.

"Microsoft has built an amazing living canvas with Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, which allows the storytellers of our time to express themselves in a new medium. They have fundamentally changed how people think about games," Jackson said in a prepared statement. "My vision, together with Microsoft Game Studios, is to push the boundaries of game development and the future of interactive entertainment."
Jackson believes that the Xbox 360 platform is currently at the stage where storytellers can work their craft in the same way they do today with movies. If the hype is to be believed, gamers are in for a treat.

  1. Imagine a video game as immersive and ambiant as LOTR was. Fact is, up until now video games have been made by programmers and not story tellers. Perhaps this explains why most (except for a few notable exceptions) movie based video games have fared poorly when compared to it's movie counterpart. Jackson is a master of story telling and creating compelling visuals and memorable characters. Imagine what he could do with a video game?
  2. Jackson was the first person IMHO to introduce computer graphics into a major film in a manner that was seemless. The graphics don't look like graphics they look like orcs, trolls, balrogs, etc.Maybe he will be the first to make a game that is truly cinematic as well - in a way that really does look and feel like a film.
  3. I wonder how much work he did the on King Kong game? It has his name on it along with Ubisofts's It's story line is not totaly like the movie's.
  4. Video games ARE made by programmers. Ofcourse that depends on what you mean by "made".
  5. yeah but imagine Pete Jackson making a LOTR xbox live sortof thing, that be pretty cool.. like you pick a race ( orcs, hobbits, elfs, what ever ) basicly like World of Warcraft but with a LOTR feel to it?
