Blockbuster to unveil movie streaming set-top box
Blockbuster has been one of the slowest companies to innovate in the next-gen movie market, but the home video rental giant is supposedly taking a step forward later this month by unveiling its own set-top box for streaming films directly to TV sets.
This would put Blockbuster in direct competition with products such as Vudu and the Apple TV, which received a revamp earlier this year in light of disappointing sales, as well as a similar movie-streaming product by Netflix and LG.
Blockbuster’s device will likely be tied to the Movielink film download service that the company acquired last year for $6.6 million, which included rights to distribute some 6,000 movies. If anything, it’s interesting to see how this video rental behemoth is being pushed forward by the market into movie streaming, in order to pick up its ailing business at the risk of cannibalizing sales at their retail chain.

Blockbuster is trying to get people into there stores and having streaming video totally defeats that purpose. Blockbuster redid there video mailers to get people into there stores. Blockbuster decreased the amount of video mailings you get and in turn increased how many videos you get in the store.
Blockbuster can't decide what they want to do and that is why they are in trouble in a profit aspect. I stopped going to Blockbuster for the fact is they redid the stores providing less older movies to rent and increased the area size where they sell used movies. Even with that you still have a hard time renting new releases cause none are available. There were a couple of times where I had to wait weeks to rent a movie.

| windmill007 on April 11, 2008 1:16 PM | I really like Netflix. I want bluray and blockbuster and hollywood video both don't carry it which I find unbelieveable. But even if they did they can't touch netflix for price. I pay like $18 a month and rent over 10 bluray movies. Also netflix has free streaming. I have my TV hooked up to my computer and watch FREE Streamed movies to my TV without any expensive box.
I know blockbuster has online movie rental service and I can't comment on that but I'm not sure it as good as netflix in speed plus netflixs website is just too cool!
