Sony working on PS3 movie download service

Sony’s decision to bring video to its PlayStation store has been expected for a long time, and if a recent LA Times report is accurate, the entertainment and electronics giant finally has concrete plans to launch an online film and television streaming service through its PlayStation 3 console as early as this summer.

The new service would position the company to compete with the likes of Apple’s iTunes and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, both of which already offer movie and TV shows for download. Though it would seem Sony is coming a bit late to the party, it’s safe to say that while its competitors have the advantage of an earlier launch none of them have picked up much traction yet, so it’s not all said and done in this rapidly growing market.

  1. Sweet...I think the first one that can deliver real HD content will have a winner on its hands! And not movies from 10 years ago either. New releases! Thats what people want and will pay for I think. Would be cool if they ahd some type of subscription model like Netflix instead of a pay per download per say.
  2. Blockbuster may have that in the future. As for now, the 360 does have recent movies for download (although it is pay per dl), the ps3 is late for the party.

You can't say a remake such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was better then the Original "Willie Wonka" or the same for the Star Trek movies.I would much rather download oldies-classics then new-crap that was produced just for the money.[Edited by TimeParadoX on 2008-04-22 21:53:36]

That's just how Sony gets down. Owning a very successful and major movie studio allows them to do things that others can't. Sony will dominate this area as well.
