Mozilla sites die shortly after Download Day begins

By Justin Mann

On June 17, 2008, 1:05 PM

Today is Firefox download day as reported earlier, and many of us have been eagerly waiting to not only grab the official Firefox 3.0 release but also help Mozilla break records. It seems, however, that record might have some difficulty being achieved – as the Get Firefox site is dead in the water as of this post. On top of that, the official Mozilla site is also dead, dying quietly with a “Service Unavailable” message. The sites died within minutes of Firefox 3 going live.

Perhaps the Mozilla team underestimated the demand this would generate. Perhaps it was also a bad idea for them to make the release public in the middle of the day. Sure, they have grabbed a huge audience – but what good is that audience if the servers are down? If you're able to grab it from a mirror, go for it. Otherwise it looks like we'll just have to wait for their servers to calm down.
