Back in June, a European company called EFiX first announced their USB dongle product that promised to enable any PC to boot and install OS X from a retail DVD by automatically handling all the necessary patching and tweaks. The device was supposed to launch that month, but after a few false starts, it has just begun shipping to consumers for $155.

Matt Buchanan over at Gizmodo has posted a review of the dongle, and despite a few caveats, it appears to live up to its promises. Only few specific hardware configurations are supported at the moment, but if your computer happens to fit those specs, you’ll not only be able to install an unmodified copy of Mac OS X but also to use the Software Update feature – something Psystar machines cannot do.
