Tech Tip of the Week: A List of PC Game Classics Available Free of Charge

Major game companies don't hesitate to charge an arm and a leg for new releases, with most launching around $60 these days. As much as you enjoy lining up outside the local GameStop at 3AM to embrace the latest shooter, parting with 60 big ones hurts a little inside. It doesn't help that many developers rub salt in the wound by lacing titles with DRM mechanisms -- but let's not go there.

Alternatively, there are tons of free games online, but very few are worth playing (yeah, we're looking at you Obama Alien Defense). What you may not be aware of however, is the wealth of older commercial titles freely available, just waiting to be discovered.

Dozens of old school favorites like Doom and GTA can be had at no cost. We've compiled a brief list of popular titles from yesteryear that you can download absolutely free of charge -- and that's something to appreciate in an age of hidden fees and fine print.

  1. Pretty cool! Fallout 1...must play....

  2. Doom's source code and ports are, of course, completely useless to the vast majority of people without the game's data (which is NOT free, except for the shareware which has been free since the very beginning, and therefore isn't really newsworthy at this point).

  3. That`s what i`m talking about

    IDKFA

    I'm IDDQD!

  4. What console can say this? There's no such thing as downloading or getting for free an old game on a console platform. PC gaming is where all of the good stuff is!

  5. I'd have to say from this list Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is the best game, so well made and free! If someone remade this game with current generation features they would make a killing.

  6. Not bad! Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun still rocks! Of course, I still wait for the next installment of several other classics, of which I dare to mention the Syndicate series... or the next Command and Conquer Generals!

  7. DOOM is not free or freeware. The engine is open source and freely modifyable/distributable, however the DOOM graphics/sounds/level resources are not. This means you have to find a freeware iwad, or use the shareware iwad file. You cannot obtain or distribute doom.wad or doom2.wad for free.

  8. What console can say this? There's no such thing as downloading or getting for free an old game on a console platform. PC gaming is where all of the good stuff is!

I got flOw and Gran Turismo HD for free on my PS3...

  9. Trackmania Forever, Some team 17 games, Hidden & Dangerous, Airborne Ranger on Atari site, Midway's area 51 (not that good), Prism (by the National Gaurd), America's Army, Theseus...

  10. Wow, I didn't know many of these games were going for free! Thanks!

  11. Don't tempt me, I like free stuff.

  12. I was just thinkin a few days ago about the time when i played soviet strike and nuklear strike, i wounder if those will come back and will be free :-)

  13. Nice list!

Those are some truly classic title, I wasn't around for any of them but it'll be a blast to go back in time and experience some retro gaming, thanks!

  14. I liked doom very much. It was the first really funny LAN game. This is a game I would try again. I remember someone made a game engine so you could use a modern graphic card with the old game. Made i look much better.

  15. I've tried Stunt Driver and emulators before. Still missing from the list...aww...

  16. zere's an old windows or dos game

where u are on a space ship or something and u fill it with fuel from an orange room and shoot other space things while u move in a maze and later go release prisonners from jail where zey r wearing blue...

it starts with the pic of a man sitting behind his desk and putting his hand on the table...

does anyone remember wat is its name?

its in the 1990's i think i used to play it on my cousins pc when i was about 7 and i so much need it

  17. IDSPISPOPD anyone?

  18. I'm reasonably certain your refering to a game called DECENT, DECENT 2, or DECENT 3D. Loved that game. X,Y,Z vectors, smart A.I., great weapon and ship up-grades. The maps could be a brain scorcher sometimes, great stuff. It was a blast with the sound up and the lights out
