Apple iPhone pre-orders hit 600,000, AT&T halts sales
AT&T and Apple started accepting pre-orders for the new iPhone 4 yesterday, as expected. And while you could say sales were a total success, in reality the whole process turned out a complete debacle as neither company could cope with the demand. Apple reportedly logged more than 600,000 early orders, the largest number of pre-orders it has ever taken in a single day, imposing a strain on computer systems that prompted AT&T to take orders by pen and paper.
At roughly 5PM yesterday the carrier said it would stop taking pre-orders for the phone indefinitely so it could meet demand once the device actually launches next week, on June 24, and that it would reopen the process depending on how soon it can replenish inventory. Unfortunately for anxious would be iPhone 4 owners, it seems problems included not only server connection failures and general mayhem both online and in person, but also data leaks.
According to Gizmodo, the ordering system mistakenly presented users with other customers' account details, including their address, invoicing overview and outgoing phone calls. AT&T claims that they have been unable to replicate the issue and gave no official statement on what could have caused it. Gizmodo, however, reported that the failures and leaks were caused by a server update that "went wrong" last weekend and affected all ordering systems and programs.
This is not the first time AT&T customer data has been compromised. Just last week hackers managed to exploit a vulnerability on a web server of the U.S. operator to gain the email addresses of more than 100,000 iPad owners.

Steve Job throws out the crud and the hogs lust after it. Before any person says I'm an Apple hater, I own many of their products but WILL NOT line up or preorder them until several months have past. |

The iPhone 4 is great if nobody else is on the same wifi connection, lol. It's amazing how 600,000+ people just want to immediately order these things not even knowing how well they'll actually work...real smart people...real smart, lol. |

Exactly, 600,000+ people most likely had a warm liquid that flowed between their legs when seeing the iPhone 4 for the first time. They will get a surprise how it performs on the AT&T network. |

Get an HTC Evo instead. So many reasons that make it superior: faster, bigger screen, better cam, flash, open source as opposed to Applyrrany. (Yes, this is the first time this term has ever been used, according to Google. And u heard it on Techspot!) Just got mine today as an upgrade after many happy days with HTC Hero. |

Some things that I don't like about the iPhone: 1. Fixed capacity. Cannot expand storage beyond what the manufacture gives you. 2. Lack of USBmicro port, makes charging this device proprietary to Apple's cable. 3. iTunes music/media syncing is limited to a single computer. 4. Cannot access your photo's or music without iTunes software. 5. Calendar, contacts, etc, only sync's with iTunes. 6. Syncing email requires Mac computer 10.5.8 or better. No Windows support. 7. Applications are limited to what Apple approves of. Lack of 3rd party support (Adobe Flash) 8. Multi-tasking is limited to Apple applications, no 3rd party support for multi-task. 9. Not a true 4G device. 10. Made of glass, means you better not drop it or bend it. 11. Video chat requires WiFi, doesn't work over AT&T's network. 12. Built-in battery means you cannot reset the phones by taking out the battery. Lack of replaceable battery shortens the lifespan of this phone. 13. No SD Micro card slot. 14. Syncing is presently on the wire. No over-the-air synchronization, yet. 15. Single one-size-fits-all design, available in only 2 colors. Lacks many options common to existing phone lines. 16. Manufacturer has a poor WiFi history. 17. You're stuck with AT&T. |

9Nails - good points. 10. The glass is supposedly strengthened so its not like windowpane glass. But I'm sure its still breakable, just not super fragile. 12. Battery is still going to last longer than most people keep their phones before upgrading. 17. AT&T does suck. |

FYI... Jailbreak it and you will have that capability.
