WOF: What's your favorite 'geek' movie of all time?

[Weekend Open Forum] The last couple of decades have brought about a number of movies that in one way or another try to capture geek psychology and culture. We've seen everything from the hilariously misconceived hacker that can get into any computer by frantically typing random commands until the words 'access granted' appear on-screen (I'm looking at you Hugh Jackman), to a few gems that hit closer to the mark of portraying what it's like to be a geek or an outsider.

Our question for you today is simple: What's your favorite geek movie of all time? It doesn't need to be strictly related to computers -- fans of science fiction, comedy, fantasy, superhero, documentary or whatever genres are welcome. A few examples to get you started: Sneakers, Pirates of Silicon Valley, and Office Space.

  1. Swordfish was a fairly good hacker movie.

  2. Gotta be Napoleon Dynamite.

  3. Gotta be Napoleon Dynamite.
Finally, somebody actually mentioned an actual geek movie.

  4. What is the difference between a geek and a nerd?

  5. Isn't geek nerd spelled backwards....?

  6. Isn't geek nerd spelled backwards....?

    I don't know...my wife tells me a nerd is intelligent, and a geek is a socially awkward *****. apparently I am a nerd/freak.

  7. Finally, somebody actually mentioned an actual geek movie.

Oh, i beg to differ on that point

The more i think back about Weird Science the more i remember about it and that i liked it. In fact, I'm gonna have to go put it in my Netflix queue so I can watch it again.

The geeks in Weird Science run up to their bedroom to use their home computer gear to create their own perfect girlfriend. Now, how geeky (and resourceful ) is that? haha

    • They use a Memotech MTX512 with FDX add-on home computer
    • They have an AI Feed Scanner to scan in photos of the characteristics they want to create
    • Use Crypto-Smasher V3.10 program to hack into the Pentagon's mainframe for more data and power

First off, I was on board with, "Real Genius" back on page one, go check.

Second; then you should put "Repli-Kate" **, in you queue also. Ali Landry is sort of like Lisa, but with implants. This movie also had Eugene Levy, of "American Pie" ("fame"?).

I knew that Courtney Cox's name linked to "science" somehow. She was in "Misfits of Science", the TV series.

** Repli-Kate is one of the very few actually almost really funny movies from National Lampoon. Well, then there's "Animal House".

As this thread moves along, it would seem that every movie with a computer theme, special FX, or is sci-fi, has become categorized as a "geek" movie.

As an example "Star Trek" can be enjoyed be geek and normal mortal alike. It's when you spend too much time in your room waxing your phaser to "Voyager" episodes with a heavy, "Seven of Nine" presence.in them, that you may have to hope they develop implant goggles like Giordi's, so that you remain sighted during your retirement. This would be known as the. "guh-ick" factor, which when combined with the "eek" your mother shrieks when she catches you, is probably the root origin of the term "geek" in the first place.... (See you never knew it was an acronym, did you)?

Then there's "Plan B", Jolene Blalock.

    Well there is the definition.

    1) OK. Done! Repli-Kate is now in the queue as well

    2) Forgive my tangential comment in the thread but responding to red

Don't be picking on Bill. Ever see Boston Legal? now that is some master thespianism.

YES! Bill Shatner in Boston Legal was at his best

  11. I think they left Jolene's a** crack shower scene in the Star Trek Enterprise" boxed set. If that not enough to "get your "geek on", so to speak, there's always the Linda Park lingerie episode. (I think that this was titled, "Mirror Mirror" the same as it was in STOS).

  12. YES! Bill Shatner in Boston Legal was at this best

Of course it was, I concur with both of you.

BUT, at this point he had 40 years + of practice/ experience in acting, and James Spader to hold him up.

I will agree with that. Spader is tremendous.

  14. I loved Office Space, that beating they give that Copier. lol

  15. Got beat to the obvious 80's classics - War Games, Real Genius, Tron, etc., Real Genius being my fav.

  16. Got to be "War Games". Way ahead of its tme.

  17. "Clue". It was a movie based on a board game. And a damn fine movie a that

  18. E.T. & Weird Science rock my socks off.

  19. Second; then you should put "Repli-Kate" **, in you queue also. Ali Landry is sort of like Lisa, but with implants. This movie also had Eugene Levy, of "American Pie" ("fame"?).

    @captain

Took your advice, put "Repli-Kate" in my Netflix queue. It finally bubbled to the top and I watched it last night. Cute movie.

Tho they did copy a famous scene where a mirror breaks then different people mime and pretend to be their own mirror image.

Most notably Groucho and Harpo Marx in Duck Soup - tho i think also Chaplain before the Marx Bros. However, I must admit that while the Marx Bros. version was funnier, watching Ali Landry is more scenic

Clip of the mirror scene in the Marx Bros flick "Duck Soup" where Harpo is disguised to impersonate Groucho's character

p.s. Does anyone born after say 1980, still watch the old Marx Bros. flicks?

  20. Regardless of who says what, there will never be a substitute for War Games.

  21. Hackers should have been billed as a comedy. I have it on DVD. It makes an nice beer mat :p
