AMD Radeon HD 6970 benchmark numbers leaked?

AMD might have just launched the new Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 graphics cards a week ago, but many are already looking forward to the company's real high-end offering: the Cayman-based Radeon HD 6970. We don’t expect the new cards to hit stores until sometime next month, but Chinese-language site Zol.com claims to have got its hands on a sample and has posted some benchmark results for the world to see.

The site’s numbers cover both 3DMark Vantage and the Unigine Heaven benchmark, with the Radeon HD 6970 allegedly scoring 23,499 on the first one while delivering 36.6fps on the Unigine benchmark running at 1920 x 1,080 with 4x anti-aliasing and 16x anisotropic filtering. By comparison, a GTX 480 on the same platform scored 21,106 in 3DMark and ran Unigine Heaven at 29.5fps, while an HD 5870 managed 19,337 and 17.3, respectively.

Going by these numbers it looks like AMD’s upcoming card will bring a 10% performance improvement over Nvidia’s flagship card, the GTX 480, while boasting around 20% greater performance the Radeon HD 5870 it’s replacing. With the Radeon HD 6870 putting on an impressive show, we're definitely looking forward to see how the new Cayman-based Radeon cards perform. For now, though, we’ll take this leak with a grain of salt.

  1. looks good, wonder how bad would it break my bank?

  2. Yes, yes... I like this competitive card releasing. It helps bring the price down on already solid cards. I bought a 1 gig version of the GTX 460 as soon as it was released, and I already see prices going down fairly quick.

  3. This change in naming has me all sorts of confused, especially with some of the benchmark reports I've been seeing around the internet. From some sources, these new cards actually underperform the 58xx series, even though they have a higher number.

  4. GTX 580 baby ^_^ in TRI-SLI

    haha, this is insane

Welcome to the world of marketing. Be thankful you don't live in Eastern Europe.

  6. Looks like the release date is slipping to 13th December. Cutting it a little fine for Christmas.

    Smells like bs.

Demand for the ATI Radeon HD 5800 series continues to be very strong

So strong that AMD release the HD 6870 to all but kill HD 5850 sales stone dead, while HD 5870 sales have been sluggish for some time- hardly surprising given the pricing compared with the 5850 (and now the 6870).

the AMD Radeon HD 6850 and HD 6870, have set new standards for performance at their respective price points, and are available in volume

Newegg shows only 5 of 11 HD 6870 SKU's in stock- the volume part of the deal must be AIB partner specific. Prices seem to be trending upwards as well.

With that in mind, we are going to take a bit more time before shipping the AMD Radeon HD 6900 series

So, as far as AMD are concerned, no component shortages, and the GTX 580 launch/performance level are definitely NOT the causes for the delay.......m'kay

  7. A guide to pricing on these cards...

Overclockers.uk (see post #69) informed its forum members that the 6970 will be a £400 (inc tax) part, while the 6950 will be priced at £300.

For comparison, the etail Overclockers.uk site lists the GTX 580 starting at £430 and GTX 480 at £294 (likely to be the GTX 570's approximate price point also)
