Seagate ships 1.5 billionth drive, celebrates with giveaway

Seagate's been pretty dang busy lately, duking it out with Western Digital for the title of top HDD manufacturer. So busy in fact, that the company nearly forgot to celebrate its 1.5 billionth drive sold! The milestone was reached on October 20, only 2.5 years after Seagate cracked the 1 billion mark in April 2008. Selling 500 million hard drives in 2.5 years is quite the accomplishment, considering the fact that it took 29 years to ship its first billion.

Seagate said that its first billion drives equated to 79 million terabytes, enough space to store 158 billion hours of digital video or 1.2 trillion hours of music. With an extra 500 million units under its belt, those figures have ballooned to approximately 118.5 million terabytes, enough for 237 billion hours of digital video or 1.8 trillion hours of music. At its current sales rate, the company expects to move its 2-billionth drive within the next 2 years.

To celebrate its achievement, the company is giving away one 1.5TB GoFlex ultra-portable external hard drive to three winners. To enter, post a comment on Seagate's blog post by 5PM PT, November 15. Alternatively, you can snail mail your name, address and contact information to: Seagate 1.5 Billion Shipped Blog Sweepstakes c/o Corp. Communications, 920 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, CA 95066. Names will be drawn on November 19.

  1. Is this open to international residents, I suggest that it should be since 1.5 billion shipments included alot from selling and shipping outside the US.

If thats the case, count me in!

Guys, to enter you have to post here: [link]

I've made the hyperlink more evident in the story above. Again, to be clear: this is not TechSpot's giveaway, it's Seagate's.

  3. This thing is a floppy drive compared to my storage array. No way its going to backup all my data. However it could be useful for my parents who need a way to backup all their digital photos.

  4. It's not fair

    This is not international

Maybe I'll stop buying Seagate products from now on!

    Kiddin' :P

  5. I like seagate but now I use wester product because of seagate failure in 7200., more fail , but I hope seagate now fix it , so I will consider to buy new hard disk from seagate

  6. Great accomplishment for Seagate. Now, I wish they would start pumping out SSDs and just set aside hybrid drives for now. In turn, hopefully, SSD prices will fall to attractive levels for the average consumer.

  7. 1.5 TB! No one could ever possibly need that much memory...

  8. external hdds are getting popular more than ever. since most users want to bring their content where ever they go. thumb drives are sometimes insufficient for people. external hdds are becoming smaller but comes with larger storage space. progress!

  9. wow...

In order for Seagate to give away something (3 fricking hard drives) as thanks, they have to sell 1.5 billion hard drives first.

If you borrow money from Seagate, they'd fly in people on first class just to break your legs.

  10. I love a good giveaway, but this is unfortunately limited to North Americans.

  11. i need more space to store my art!

"OPEN TO LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE 48 CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES"

    the fck...

  13. Seems a little insignificant giving away 3 hard drives for this big of an event for them. Whatever I guess.

  14. It's more insignificant that it it's only open to US residents. I think that should be mentioned on Techspot.

  15. Uh, I love giveaways

  16. That is certainly a ton of hard drives. Now if only they could aggregate the type of data stored on those drives and publish the information. That would be interesting.

  17. LOL...posting here won't help your chances of winning a drive...gotta post on SEAGATE's website!

  18. 1.5 TB space..Its definitely huge space. I am in to win this.

  19. Thanks for the tip. Posted on their blog hope I win! Also pretty crazy how many drives are being sold these days!

  20. That is a truly impressive feat to ship that many drives in that little time. It makes me wonder what the numbers are for some of the other major players. As things stand that means that Seagate has now shipped approximately 1 drive for every 4 and a half people on the planet, that's pretty damned impressive.

  21. I'm more of an Western Digital guy. But It's not like i hate the other manufacturers. cheers for seagate.

  22. I'd like to win one for the Gipper.

  23. Take this drive and shove it......

OK, 3 Hard drives against 1.5 billion sold is unbelievably shabby. The odds of winning are so infinitesimal, it's not worth the personal information you have to give up to enter. I switched to the WD "Caviar Black" drives a while ago, this just makes me want to buy more of them.

I think I know how they could have topped this prize. Why not send the, "lucky winner", on a no expenses paid trip to China, to work in a Seagate factory for a day.

  24. My seagate still has no bads and it's 2-3 years old. Congrats Seagate!

All I had to do was put down my name and email address to write a post, didn't even use my last name. If you win, the only info you will be giving is your address, so they can send you the hard drive. I do agree that the chances of winning will be high but that's with anything you try to win.
