The media industry in Malaysia is regulated by the Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM, translated as Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission). The SKMM has the power to implement and enforce the provisions of the communications and multimedia law, regulate all matters relating to communications and multimedia activities not provided for in the communications and multimedia law, and to recommend reforms to existing law.
The SKMM sent a memo to ISPs last week titled "Request For Action Under Section 263(2) of The Communications and Multimedia Act CMA 1998," ordering them to completely block various file sharing websites. This was one month after the country's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak promised that his administration would never censor the Internet.
The document uncovered by Wirawanweb and dated May 30, 2011 revealed that the SKMM is now fighting online copyright infringement. The memo ordered all Malaysian ISPs to immediately block the following 10 popular file sharing websites:
The letter, signed by Acting Senior Director of the Digital Security Services Division, Eneng Faridah Iskandar, says the aforementioned URLs have been found by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-Operative & Consumerism (KPDNKK) to be in contravention of law in Malaysia. This is because they breach Section 41 of the Copyright Act 1987. The ISPs were given two days to comply upon receiving the letter, and told that failure to do so is an offense under Section 242 of Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Reports are coming in that some ISPs blocked all of the URLs in question for at least a few days. Not all of the ISPs complied, however, despite the legal threat.
Anything on internet censoring is bad, very very bad. This is just the beginning, guys. More of this BS is sure to come. Is this the government's way to 'entice' brains to come back to this country? I am in Malaysia now, but already starting to pack my luggage. A country moving back into the Dark Ages is not a good place to raise my children.
Being an American 'Mat Saleh" living in this country for two years, I noticed that the people here tend to blame everything on racial disparity. One of the "guests" who commented earlier mentioned something about Malays holding grudge. Now that sounds to me as a racist comments. I am not for Malays or against Chinese or Indians, I just hate racists. While in my country people are moving towards racial integration (the appointment of Obama as the President is a very good example) Malaysians of one race still viewing other Malaysians of different ethnicity as enemies. To the guy who made that comment, I only wish to say it is this kind of attitude that led your government to do this internet censorship. BTW, calling white people "Ang Mo Kao" is also racist. Think about it and GROW UP!
then why need high speed broadband like unifi now... for what 4 mbps for only go around facebook and youtube.. arghh.. this is so stupid.... maybe now just downgrade my streamyx to 512kbps will do.. or just stop subscribe the internet... nothing matters to me now....
I hate SKMM
i'm also one of the people who against this action... this has to be end , its unfair to us 4 them to blocking some website, while other country still happily enjoy the service with no problem ... from now on , i feel like being a malaysian who has been stabbed from the back by its own kind though...why...huhu..why?
i hope the goverment will consider to UNBLOCK the site and start to wondering why people against this action
Well then, welcome to Malaysia.
Though to me there's only 2 kinds of people, either they are dicks or they aren't. The government clearly isn't the latter.
you know why they(Malaysia Goverment)orders block of The Pirate Bay, MegaUpload, FileServe, more?
Because TMnet even though now is Privatization. But behind is still under MXXXXXXX GXXXXXXX. Now u see your all boardband how much download speed your get ? 1MB =download 100kb. u see how many speed u got? many ppl got 40k-70k. If you ask them (TMnet) they will tell u got 70%speed already. Because tmnet they say must got 70% speed with your package.(means 1MB 70% =70kb.). But you can't try 1 experiment? You find someone ppl got 2 mb package use that guy account at your 1mb streamyx tel line. you will see your line will got more than 100kbps. you understand why? that means your 1 mb streamyx can fully run 100kbps. But locked your account at 70% for 1mb. because 2mb 70% nearly 140kbps. WHY They block your speed????? Because tmnet streamyx ISP Device very old. If all user got fully speed support. They device can't support. Must change new device need more money. So they block of The Pirate Bay, MegaUpload, FileServe because download very high.
BN = Barang Naik
BN = Broadband No
Don't vote for BN !
Hahahhahaha typical 3rd-world country...
they like to blocked pirate stuff...but they didnt even care to blocked porno web...wonder why...~
Better a late response to this than never, I suppose
Plus, the ISPs are going into league with the RIAA, and MPAA,
You might want to order your chain mail, mace, and tilting lance ahead of time, since it seems it can happen here after all.
that is funny. the gov dont block the fail sharing of porn movie such as megaporn. they think the porn movies must no be blocked because they (gov) themselves want to watch and download it. there must be something wrong in their head
Because as long as pornography is created in accordance with certain provisions of USC title 18 it is legal, and protected under freedom of speech provisions in the first amendment to the US Constitution.
Since piracy is the crime of copyright infringement, there is no legal basis for its protection.
And yes, copyright infringement of pornography is also a crime.
So no, there's nothing wrong in their heads. Have you had yours checked recently?
i wan't to migrate to india... i am sure they not block pirate bay... i am just to download the transformer 3... unlucky... (Game over) still many torrent sites
**** the SKMM & our **** leader Najib Tun Razak !!!! i lost all my files in megaupload......
This is pure BS. Thankfully there's many ways you can bypass this easily.
It's bad move to censor the web, it's even worse to cap. Hey leaders, what the hell ur thinking. Let's move forward.................!!!
They blocked megaupload but not rapidshare?
Rapidshare recently settled similar lawsuits and, as part of the settlements, is very, very aggressive in monitoring itself and responding to "take down" requests from content owners.
