LulzSec attacks Minecraft, Eve Online, League of Legends, others

Ever persistent in their hunt for "lulz," the crew behind Lulz Security struck again today, bombarding no less than five separate companies with distributed denial of service attacks. Celebrating "Titanic Takeover Tuesday," the group boasted of its antics on Twitter and even allowed visitors to request certain targets be attacked by calling 614-LULZSEC.

Starting approximately eight hours ago with Escapist Magazine, the group claimed that it was hammering the site with only 0.4% of its total ammunition. "Let's see what their admins are made of -- game is on folks," said LulzSec. Although it was reportedly taken offline at some point, the gaming magazine's site currently loads for us -- albeit very slowly.

After tackling Escapist, LulzSec set its crosshairs on the space-themed MMORPG Eve Online. The group not only disabled Eve's login server, but also their website (eveonline.com -- it appears to be functioning now). LulzSec proceeded to attack FinFisher.com, because "they sell self monitoring software to the government or some shit like that."

Minecraft felt the group's wrath next, having its login servers incapacitated. The popular dig 'em up's site was also taken offline thanks to a flash mob of angry gamers, not a direct assault by LulzSec. A similar attack was repeated against League of Legends: its login servers were hit by a DDoS and its main site(s) buckled under the load of seething players.

None of the attacks seem to have been provoked, nor do they serve a purpose beyond LulzSec's entertainment. The group made headlines just yesterday for publishing information swiped from the servers of Bethesda and the US Senate. Last month, they infiltrated Sony Pictures and released a stack of sensitive user data, including plaintext passwords.

battle.net was down last night, affecting diablo, Warcraft 3 and Starcraft login servers... no mention so far if it was by an attack.

btw, ddos attacks are so basic it's practically embarrassing for lulzsec to resort to such vulgar methods... at least actually hack something impressive

If anything is embarassing it's that they were able to use an SQL injection to take down an entire corporation. That's basic stuff.

  2. Theres a way to stop anonymous and lulzsec...companies just need to put in a 256bit hash encryption or 512bit DES-X, thats it, no brute force or DDoS will push through that since its almost impossible to hack

  3. I think anonymous should hack the heck out of lulzsec. Like a battle of the strongest and smartest. I'm sure anonymous would pwn lulzsec...

    Tuesday night, could be maintenance.

Yea Blizzard does their maintenance on Tuesdays.

  5. "All your base are belong to Lulzsec"... Holy crap! Honestly, if I was expecting all this publicity I'd at least get my freaking grammer right! What a tosser!

  6. @guest above, that's just a play on the phrase, "All your base are belong to us." Google it for more info.

  7. The thing that is annoying about this is if a group went to their local brick and mortar store and basically built a concrete wall in front of the entrance they would have the police beating them down with batons in a matter of minutes and be facing harsh prison sentences for their actions. All the IC3 needs to do is nail a few of these "hackers" to the wall with long prison sentences then the douchebags will realize there are consequences for their actions.

  8. can't wait for these a-holes to go to jail where they belong and get butt raped...maybe they can take princeton with them.

  9. If they keep this up they are going to end up on someone's list.

Personally, I hope they do and I hope whoever finds them throws away the key....permanently.

Princeton! I think you have a fan!

  11. Also to note btw, I was soo close to calling the Lulz number and getting them to smash my work IP, then not much work could be done! :P

The affected companies should just offer a bounty on them, like in the olden days. Put enough money on the table, they'll get sold out by someone. There is no point in doing something for the lulz if you don't brag about it.

I can't believe this has happened yet, right? WTF are they doing over there?

  13. To lump LulzSec with real hackivists such as Anonymous is like compared a transvestite to a real women. Not knocking on transvestites, just making a point.

  14. they get entertainment out of hacking websites? those nerds need to get laid...

  15. Lulz sucks. They are not even hacking. They just use DDoS to bombard the sites to take them down. Lulz blows. Lulz go away. Boooooo Lulz. Booooo. Screw Lulz.

  16. I feel sorry for the Lulz hackers. Whas a sad sad life they must lead.

I'm actually confounded by how dumb this post is.

  18. I think most of you fail to realize that Anonymous also does random, terrible things (look into their defacement of Facebook memorials), and that at least most of Anonymous is a glorified bot net. I'm not going to say no members of Anonymous know what they're doing, but I'll say that most of them are just voluntarily running a program to collectively DDoS sites.

Also, Nintendo has no internet security, because Nintendo has no internet. You can't even play games over anything but WEP encryption n the DS/DSi, and while WPA is useable for things other than games, they don't even have WPA2, meaning they're years behind in wireless security.

Nintendo products barely connect to the internet. Nintendo hasn't been hacked because their databases are probably so poorly designed that whatever a hacker found would be unintelligible. They have no sense of the online world.

  19. What is really sad is all this hacking bs will only result in more government regulation for the rest of us. The days of an open and free internet are coming to an end, because some script kiddies wanna LOL...

    ..sigh..

  20. This guy have some other idea about it all. True or false ? : http://www.americansansculottes.com/2011/06/urgent-false-fla
    -attacks-intensify.html

  21. example1013, Anonymous has many factions that use that name. I agree that certain so-called "anonymous" are full of ****** that live in their parent's basement doing nothing in life, there are real hackivists using the Anonymous name.

  22. It's not entirely for the lulz, Lulzsec claim to be declaring war with the site they originated from, 4chan. it's old users vs the new users who are in many eyes, the cancer killing /b/....which they are. The gaming sites taken offline were amoung the few sites well known to be favorite games of the newfags. Lulzsec / Anonymous / anonop / etc etc they're all pretty much Anonymous, they're all causing hell on the internet, but they disagree with how to do so.

  23. it's not WoW get your facts right

it was down for like a minute and I can't recall it happening in the whole 9 years if the game, coincides with the Lu sec news though

  24. In all honesty Lulzsec is really pi****g me off. Why bother? Its not like bringing down a site is hard, anyone can do a DDos attack.

"Ok, there are some people that can hack sites. Wow. Bravo. Hacking random sites to show what exactly?"

Idd agree what on earth they trying to proove? They should quit already.... Bloody stupid they are...

  25. LulzSec latest lulz was using a denial of service attack on the CIA's public computers. Whomever these hacker wannabes are they are just playing with death now.

It may all be for the lulz but when the government agents come armed with AR-15s, the lulz will be over for those that are responsible.

Maybe they get their Call of Duty buzz when seeing real AR-15s being pointed at them.
