Minecraft creator 'Notch' is the latest to speak out against Windows 8

Minecraft fans might want to think twice about upgrading to Windows 8 next month. According to tweets from creator and developer Markus “Notch” Persson, Microsoft asked him to help certify the game for Windows 8. Persson declined in a roundabout way, telling Redmond to instead stop trying to ruin the PC as an open platform.

A few minutes later, he fired off another tweet saying he’d rather have Minecraft not run on Windows 8 at all than to play along. He further hopes that he can convince a few people not to switch to the new operating system by doing this.

This isn’t the first time he’s spoken out against Microsoft and Windows 8. Last month during an Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit, Persson said he hopes to keep a lot of open and free platforms around and if Microsoft decided to lock Windows 8 down, it would be very bad for indie games and competition in general.

Minecraft’s creator isn’t the only prominent gaming figure to voice an opinion concerning Windows 8. A few months ago, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell told those in attendance at a video game conference that he believes the operating system is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. He predicts some of the top tier PC/OEMs will exit the market and margins will be destroyed for a lot of people.

Rob Pardo from Blizzard commented on Newell’s statement shortly after on Twitter, saying it wouldn’t be very good for them either if his predictions about Windows 8 come true.

  1. Big box retailers in Australia have been extorting us for years. I really don't care if they go out of business because they are ridiculously overpriced.

  2. First Apple Store, next Windows Store, so Why don't you follow the Leader?Who needs intelligent people when all you need is followers like isheep waiting in line for a new iPhone. They think at Redmond that people can wait too for a WinPhone 8 or maybe 9 and so on.

  3. Microsoft is saying, we are going to take more money from the Windows ecosystem. MS is reducing it's partners, making their own hardware, creating an app store, forcing a touch UI on users, pushing cloud based services, taking larger cuts from developers, etc. They have said they want to beat Apple and they think by transforming into Apple is the way to beat them. All I have to say is Linux is the way to go. I hope Steam is successful with it's Linux client and that hardware vendors do a better job at working with Linux.

  4. Something not being supported as compared to not compatible at all are two completely different things. Many companies come out with programs that "Are not supported" on certain Operating Systems that can easy be ran by using the built in "Compatibility Mode".

This "Notch" guy seems to have let the fame get to his head, and is refusing to work with a great company. Yes, Apple & Microsoft both have their ups & downs, but regardless...they are two great companies considering their success.

If it doesn't work on Win8, how much money could he be losing in sales? Probably not a small number.*nerd*

  5. He has his minecraft pocket edition on the Apple store..

    seriously...

  6. Lots of comments in here, goes to show what people are more concerned with...

    Minecraft Vs. Microsoft

  7. Microsoft would lock down the RT version even if there wasn't a penny to be made in the app market. If they didn't, the RT platform would become a target for malware and viruses, people would lose all their personal pictures, contact information, texts, etc to said malware, then no one would want a windows phone, and opt for an Android or iOS phone instead because they have a locked platform.

  8. Dont really know why somebody who makes a game with 1980 atari sytle graphics thinks that he so important people will listen to what he has to say.

And yet the outstanding success of this game would argue the point that there are still people interested in a game that consists of unique, inventive gameplay and creative expression.
