The original Toshiba Chromebook 2 was a fairly compelling low-cost notebook, but the use of an entry-level Silvermont-based Intel Celeron N2840 SoC didn't give it a whole ton of performance.

Today Toshiba has updated their Chromebook 2 to give the laptop considerably better performance. The new version is available with either a 5th-generation 'Broadwell' Intel Core i3 or Celeron processor, depending on your budget, and although it's not the latest from Intel's Skylake line, it's still a pretty significant upgrade.

The other hardware in the Chromebook 2 remains the same as the previous iteration. The laptop still comes with a 13.3-inch 1080p IPS display, 16 GB of storage, up to 4 GB of RAM, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac support. One of the only changes to the notebook's design is the addition of a backlit keyboard, with the body still clocking in at 19.3mm thick and 1.3 kg heavy.

The Chromebook 2 is priced at $330 for the model with a Celeron CPU, and $430 for the Core i3 model. Toshiba says that the models will begin shipping in October, and as they're Chromebooks, they'll come running the latest version of Google's Chrome OS.
