desperation: toshiba DVD-ROM malfunction, possible missing driver?

hi guys
this is my last chance before i give up and take it to a service shop, ive been mucking around all day tryin to figure this out.

i have suddenly started having trouble with my toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2312 drive on my presario 1500 notebook. the "add hardware wizard" which a help menu suggested is telling me that the driver for this hardware is corrupted or missing, is this likely to be the case? if so is there any danger of a downloadable version of this driver (ive scoured the windows, toshiba, and hp websites but to no avail)?

the drive is listed as installed in the "add hardware wizard" but does not appear in any lists (such as "My Computer") and does not read any discs, although it can be heard spinning the discs when inserted. is this more likely to be a hardware problem and is there anything else you can suggest?

as usual all help menus consulted have been far from helpful.

i couldnt find recognition of it in the bios anywhere (as suggested in other similar threads) but to be honest i really didnt know what i was looking at.

thanks for anything you can give me,
Mitch

problem solved. sent a distress call to a tech support address from the toshiba website. against all probability i got a helpful response which directed me to a microsoft support website.

from there i followed the instructions, i had to delete the upper and lower filter items from a certain key in the registry editor. heres a transcript of my correspondence with toshiba:

Hello,

If you have a conflict with the CD/DVD Drive and the Error Code is 19, 31,
39 or 41 then go to the following Microsoft web site and follow the
instructions.
