Welcome to TechSpot
You have a load of ad/spyware. Run Adaware and Spybot (do a web-update first). Let them remove all that they find. After that: Unless already removed by Adaware or Spybot, let HJT remove them. still have an extra search bar showing up
Thanks for your help so far but still having a problem. I've followed your instructions but after about an hour of use (after clicking on a link) I see this extra search bar show up. After running HJT again, I fix what I think is the offender (www.websearch.com) but it eventually comes back. I also think it makes IE unstable.
BTW, she uses Citrix so I think that accounts for the "CSS" and "ConfigSafe" references below. I would switch to Foxfire as my browser but it's my wife's work computer and I'm not sure if her IT dept would support it. Also. don't understand this part: C:\WINNT\system32\regsvc.exe Switch this (remote registry) Service off and then DISABLE Thanks a lot for your assistance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7 Scan saved at 12:47:01 PM, on 9/6/2004 Platform: Windows 2000 SP2 (WinNT 5.00.2195) MSIE: Internet Explorer v5.00 SP2 (5.00.2920.0000) Running processes: C:\WINNT\System32\smss.exe C:\WINNT\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINNT\system32\services.exe C:\WINNT\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINNT\System32\ibmpmsvc.exe C:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINNT\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Navnt\defwatch.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Navnt\rtvscan.exe C:\WINNT\System32\QCONSVC.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\regsvc.exe C:\WINNT\system32\MSTask.exe C:\WINNT\System32\WBEM\WinMgmt.exe C:\WINNT\System32\mspmspsv.exe C:\WINNT\Explorer.EXE C:\WINNT\System32\tp4serv.exe C:\WINNT\System32\ltmsg.exe C:\WINNT\System32\S3Tray2.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\PkgMgr\HOTKEY\TPHKMGR.exe C:\WINNT\System32\PRPCUI.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\CONNEC~1\Qctray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\TP98TRAY.EXE C:\WINNT\System32\RunDll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Navnt\vptray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\IOMEGA~1\directcd.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe C:\Program Files\2Wire\Gateway\2PortalMon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WSup.exe C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE C:\Program Files\2Wire Wireless\Client Manager\CMTWO.EXE C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\DesktopMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\RIMDeviceManager\RIMDeviceManager.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers\BbDevMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\BPUtilities\HijackThis.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\WINNT\System32\batmeter.exe R1 - First of all, welcome to Techspot.
![]() To disable Remote Registry, do this: Goto the control panel from the start menu. Look for administrative tools. (If you don't see it, on the left side click on "Classic View".) In administrative views, select services. In the resulting screen, scroll to the line that says "Remote Registry". Left click once on it, then right click on it and select properties. Select Stop. Then change the startup type to Disabled. Now, I'd also suggest having HiJackThis fix the following lines: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50168 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50168 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50168 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Search Toolbar - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll Restart the system after fixing these, then rerun hijack this, and post those logs. |

TVMedia entries keep returning after HJT run
Thanks for the welcome and all the help! I disabled remote registry services however the "TVMedia" entries keep returning after I try to fix them with HJT.
Question: I usually surf the net using a profile that DOESN"T have administrative priviledges however on this computer, my wife has one profile for everything (which has admin priv). Does this make her system more vulnerable? Thanks again. __________________________________________ Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7 Scan saved at 9:13:07 PM, on 9/8/2004 Platform: Windows 2000 SP2 (WinNT 5.00.2195) MSIE: Internet Explorer v5.00 SP2 (5.00.2920.0000) Running processes: C:\WINNT\System32\smss.exe C:\WINNT\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINNT\system32\services.exe C:\WINNT\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINNT\System32\ibmpmsvc.exe C:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINNT\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Navnt\defwatch.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Navnt\rtvscan.exe C:\WINNT\System32\QCONSVC.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\MSTask.exe C:\WINNT\system32\stisvc.exe C:\WINNT\System32\WBEM\WinMgmt.exe C:\WINNT\System32\mspmspsv.exe C:\WINNT\Explorer.EXE C:\WINNT\System32\tp4serv.exe C:\WINNT\System32\ltmsg.exe C:\WINNT\System32\S3Tray2.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\PkgMgr\HOTKEY\TPHKMGR.exe C:\WINNT\System32\PRPCUI.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\CONNEC~1\Qctray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\TP98TRAY.EXE C:\WINNT\System32\RunDll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Navnt\vptray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\IOMEGA~1\directcd.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe C:\Program Files\2Wire\Gateway\2PortalMon.exe C:\Program Files\Dell AIO Printer A960\dlbfbmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Dell AIO Printer A960\dlbfbmon.exe C:\WINNT\System32\batmeter.exe C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE C:\Program Files\2Wire Wireless\Client Manager\CMTWO.EXE C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\DesktopMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\RIMDeviceManager\RIMDeviceManager.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers\BbDevMgr.exe C:\BPUtilities\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = http://www.yahoo.com/ R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrackPointSrv] tp4serv.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LTWinModem1] ltmsg.exe 9 O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [S3TRAY2] S3Tray2.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tourpath] regedit /s c:\winnt\tour.reg O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Synchronization Manager] mobsync.exe /logon O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPHOTKEY] C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\PkgMgr\HOTKEY\TPHKMGR.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TP4EX] tp4ex.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PRPCMonitor] PRPCUI.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QCTRAY] C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\CONNEC~1\Qctray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPTRAY] C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\TP98TRAY.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BMMGAG] RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\pwrmonit.dll,StartPwrMonitor O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ConfigSafe] C:\CFGSAFE\NTFSCLUP.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CSScheduleCheck] C:\CFGSAFE\SCHWIZEX.EXE -CHECK O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vptray] C:\PROGRA~1\Navnt\vptray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [POINTER] point32.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adaptec DirectCD] C:\PROGRA~1\IOMEGA~1\directcd.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2wSysTray] C:\Program Files\2Wire\Gateway\2PortalMon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell AIO Printer A960] "C:\Program Files\Dell AIO Printer A960\dlbfbmgr.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [batmeter] C:\WINNT\System32\batmeter.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe O4 - Startup: Desktop Manager.lnk = C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\DesktopMgr.exe O4 - Global Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE O4 - Global Startup: 2Wire Wireless Client Manager.lnk = C:\Program Files\2Wire Wireless\Client Manager\CMTWO.EXE O12 - Plugin for .pdf: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS\nppdf32.dll O12 - Plugin for .spop: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins\NPDocBox.dll |

Well.. ANY administrator account can be a vulnerability in the hands of someone competent, or incompetent, enough. In this case, it's certainly possible that your wife innocently visited a website, and you ran into trouble. Frequently, however, Windows normal users have enough privledges to allow spyware to install, sadly.
Also, if your wife has been impacted by the spyware, she may have hooks in her personal profile which are reinstroducing spyware to the machine. To be safe, try cleaning her account as well. Now, to remove TV Media, remove both: R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll And BOTH of the two entries: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe You can also look in add/remove programs for this TV Media stuff. |

Another bad dog is this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot to remove/stop it see here: http://www.help2go.com/modules.php?n...rticle&sid=211 O4 - Global Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE When you right-click on the Winzip-Quickpick in the Systray, you can permanently disable that by selecting Exit. It only burns up resources unnecessarily. |
