It sounds like you are trying to install the control panel without the sound drivers installed. Go to add remove programs and uninstall any sound max programs you see. Reboot. Go here. Go to audio and expand the tree. Scroll down to THE 2ND Windows XP (it's the 12th one down) and download the SoundMax AD1986A Audio Driver V5.10.01.4160 for Windows 2000/XP/2003. zip file. Unzip the file and click on set up. The driver should install automatically. I'm not sure if the control panel will install or if you need to click on the Asus setup to get the peripherals installed. I also don't know why it's 5 times larger than the first update. Sounds like they were having some issues. With the executable file you don't need to concern yourself with the manual driver installation steps you quoted everything should set up automatically.
Edit:You should probably upgrade to SP3 when it comes out if you are still running SP1 |

Hello Again:
I followed your instructions, removed soundmax program, download the driver "Audio_32bit_V510014160" from the page as you told me, when I opened the folder, I clicked on asus setup logo, message came up: "does not support this operating system: WNT_5.1P", then I tried folder 2003 setup, installed ok but still did not work (red ring on top of soundmax icon), after I tried the other folder that came with it, 2K_XP, did the same as the 2003 one, did not work. I will keep on trying but if you could send me further suggestions I will appreciate. thanks for your time trying to help me, regards. |

That's not right. It should work. That's the set up for that board. So here's what I want you to do. Do the exact same thing. Uninstall any sound max programs, and delete the package you downloaded. Then go back to the ASUS site and this time download the 6th file down also for XP and also for your board. The only thing I can think of is your board might be an earlier revision thats not compatable with the newer file. The one you want to try this time is V5.10.1.4150.
BUT before you do any of this, go into your BIOS. On the main screen highlight Advanced settings and hit enter. On the Advanced settings window highlight Onboard Devices Configuration and hit enter. In the Onboard Devices Configuration window, the top entry should be HD Audio Controller. Make sure that is set to ENABLED. If it says enabled then just hit ctrl-alt-delete and let it reboot. If it's disabled and you have to change it to enabled, then when you're done hit F10 It will ask if you want to save changes. Say yes (y) and hit enter. It will then reboot and you can go ahead and try to install the V5.10.1.4160 drivers from yesterday if the audio controller was disabled. If it was enabled then delete that folder and go ahead and download and try the older driver package. Edit: Post back if you need help with the BIOS stuff or anything else. |

[QUOTE=luvhuffer]SiS 963LuA is the onboard graphics chip. Go to device manager and double click on sound video and game controller. Click on the entry for the sound device and go to the driver tab. Hit update driver then no don't look for it on line, next install from a specific location. Then Search for best drivers look in these locations. Hit browse then navigate to where you downloaded and unzipped the 7012 drivers. Follow the instructions. Or....
Go to the driver tab and uninstall the device. Reboot. When the new hardware wizard opens navigate to the place where you saved the unzipped files." Where exactly would you find the Onboard Graphics Chip? =s..I went to 'Device 'Manager, clicked on 'Sound Video and Game Controler', and there was -No- entry for the sound device, -Or- A 'Driver Tab'..Unless it shows up as a totally different name on mine. >.<...I did the next couple of things, until I got to 'Browse'. Problem is, I don't know where or -What- I was supposed to download to get to the 7012 Drivers...Please Help this helpless child. =3 (I have Windows XP by the way =D) Please and Thank you. <3 |

the onboard graphics chip can be made from many different manufacturers.. and second its totaly different function to a onboard sound chip... which is what this thread is for...
any sort of graphics adaptor should be under the catagory "display adaptor" in device manager... open a new thread if you still have some problems |

I've tried to follow along but have had no luck. I've recently done the same thing, accidentaly uninstalled my SoundMax from my computer (not sure which model of Soundmax I removed).
My computer is a Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M computer. Have no sound what so ever on my computer now and looking to get things back to how they were. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. Running Windows XP |

![]() To get help with your problem, you should create a new thread in the forum describing the problem. This avoids confusion when it's not clear which answer goes to which problem plus it will hi-light your own problem on the boards. Am sure you'll get help (just remember is Sunday today so help is a bit slower today as many not log in) |

Hi lehapankov
![]() As you've discovered, the Hardware Update Wizard can only be used to point to .inf files (.inf files are Windows driver installation files). But before looking at issues of your driver file (and explaining issues of difference between .exe and .inf files) .. could you please first indicate: >> Your make and model computer (and motherboard if you know it) >> What version of Windows do you have installed? and what Service Pack level? >> Could you also please provide a link to the driver .exe file you downloaded? and finally
