'Access denied' undenied, but cannot copy

I installed a new hard drive, installing a new version of Win XP (Home) on my new hard drive. I thought I could cut and paste files from the old system drive to my new one.

The first problem I had was even being able to look at some of the files on the old system drive. After some messing around I worked out that files which read 'access denied' could be accessed in safe mode after I took ownership of them. But, I stll can't copy the files onto my new hard drive. I get "access denied". Can anyone help?

Have you set up consistent users and passwords on both the old and new systems so that your privledges on the new system qualify you to access files on the old?

It's unrelated to your problem, but for convenience if you haven't yet, be sure that both machines are members of the same workgroup (My Computer-->Properties--> Computer Name-->[Change]. Likewise for conveinece if you are only connecting the two comptuers it may be helpful to implement the old Netbeui protcol which will allow the PCs to connect a bit faster than just TCP/IP. For instructions and needed files browse your Windows XP CD to CD-ROm drive often =D at 'D:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI'.

Hope that helps...

Even MS does not recommend this -- stick with only the TCP stack

Jobeard,

You must have a lot of experience to be offering consistent constructive criticism. Thanks for showing it off!

Thanks Ron; I try to stick with just the issue to be solve. I worked 37 years
in Hi Tech with hugh political overtones. It took that long to learn how :)
