What just happened? Amazon has unveiled a new lineup of Fire tablets, including the Fire HD 8 (2024), Fire HD 8 Kids, and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro. The Fire HD 8 introduces several much-needed upgrades over its predecessor, including increased RAM, enhanced cameras, and improved battery life. The kid-friendly models share similar specifications but come with additional features such as robust parental controls and other child-focused enhancements.

The Fire HD 8 (2024) comes in two configurations: the base model includes 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, while the higher-end version offers 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Both variants are powered by an unspecified hexa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz and feature an 8-inch HD display. Additional hardware includes a 5MP camera and up to 13 hours of battery life.

However, the standout feature of the new tablet is its software. It's packed with a range of GenAI features, including a Writing Assistant designed to help refine messages. The AI assistant integrates with emails, Microsoft Word documents, and even social media apps.

The tablet also includes a Webpage Summaries feature, which can summarize web pages opened with the built-in Silk browser. It can highlight the key points of an article or any web page, providing a clear and concise summary without requiring users to scroll through large amounts of information.

Another AI-driven feature in the Fire HD 8 is the Wallpaper Creator app, which allows users to design custom wallpapers using text prompts. Users can select from built-in prompts or enter their own to generate unique wallpapers.

All of these GenAI features – including Writing Assist, Webpage Summaries, and Wallpaper Creator – will also be available on select older Fire HD tablets. The rollout to compatible devices is expected to begin later this month.

The Fire HD 8 (2024) is available in three colors: black, emerald, and hibiscus. Pricing starts at $99.99 for the 32GB model and $129.99 for the 64GB version. However, during the ongoing Prime Big Deal Days sale (until October 9), they're discounted to $54.99 and $84.99, respectively.

The Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro offer similar hardware to the standard Fire HD 8 but come with added benefits, including a subscription to Amazon Kids+ and a two-year free replacement guarantee for physical damage. Both tablets also feature a durable, kid-proof case, available in a variety of designs, including exclusive Disney-themed styles.

The new version no longer works with the powerful and extremely useful charging dock found with the previous two generations. One set forward, ten steps back. Dumb. Inexcusable. Forgetaboutit...

The Fire tablets have always been very bad. The proprietary Amazon software is crappy and full of subscription fees

Saw a YT video other day Amazon, can remove announced any purchased book from your kindle, or sway it out for an "updated" version . Doesn't sit right with me

Given that if easy to use, and give people what they what, all play to them. never had one, put if in the same category as my hate for Apple, too controlling , but at least cheap. Maybe kids ones are good, no way for kids to be 3 clicks away from some horrific
