AMD debunks claims of 32GB Radeon RX 9070 XT variant

What just happened? The rumor that AMD is developing a 32GB version of the RX 9070 XT was always a little shaky, given its source. Now, the claims have been debunked by the company itself. However, that's not to say Team Red won't be making an RDNA 4 product with 32GB of VRAM at some point.

There was excitement following rumors this week claiming AMD would be launching a high-end RDNA 4 GPU sometime in the first half of 2025. The amount of VRAM it will feature was supposedly undecided, but the leaker said it could be as much as 32GB.

It was suspected that this would be a workstation or enterprise-focused card such as the Radeon Pro W7900, which comes with 48GB of GDDR6, rather than a gaming card. But the leaker then claimed it would be a 32GB variant of the upcoming RX 9070 XT, which has 16GB of memory. They added that it would be very expensive and primarily designed for AI, but still a gaming card and not a Radeon Pro.

The rumor came from a user on Chiphell, the Chinese tech-focused forum. As we noted at the time, that meant it needed to be taken with a heavy dose of salt. It seemed especially unusual as AMD has previously said that with RDNA 4, it would be prioritizing its mid-range and lower-end products to increase the company's overall market share. The company also said it would not be releasing cards in the RX 9000 line that compete with Nvidia's top-end Blackwell GPUs.

Now, Frank Azor, AMD's Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions and Gaming Marketing, has replied to several tweets about the rumor, confirming that the RX 9070 XT is not coming in a 32GB version.

Azor is very specific in stating that no RX 9070 XT with that memory configuration is planned. However, he never ruled out other RDNA 4 models with 32GB.

It still seems highly unlikely that we will see an AMD gaming card like an RX 9900 XTX that comes with 32GB. If there is an RDNA 4 card with that amount of VRAM, don't expect it to be a gaming one.

I doubt the 9070XT will have the horsepower to use 32gigs in gaming, but I do think we'll see an AI or workstation card with 32gigs of VRAM. The 90 series cards are popular with content creators and video editors for its massive VRAM. Now, we have LLMs and AI models that can realistically run on a PC, so I think AMD will make an RDNA4 card with 32GB of VRAM that isn't meant to target gaming.

It would be more interesting, though I highly doubt it will happen, if they make video cards with modular VRAM.

If they'd just put more memory on the GPU I'm sure they'd make some money by actually creating a compelling product.

It would not anywhere near the bandwidth. Extra memory would only be of use for AI. AMD should look at a 9080XT class gpu with 320 bit bus, 20GB, 2x the IC, 25% more cores than 9070XT.
