Australia's defamation laws could reveal social media trolls' identities

You talk like Australia is a country like China or Russia, Pffff, Australia is one of the country's with the best trust wordy legal systems.

And tell me, don't have victims of cyberbullying or trolling have rights to, or do they just have to take is as a fact of life that they can't do anything?

Yeah, there are sure problems with this law, but, that's always the case with laws that fringe on the rights of privacy, but it's not like the data can be given over just because the victim wants them, it still needs a judge to approve the case to see that the victim is really a victim of a crime, or just a victim of free speech.

Looks to me like they are in the right spots on the lists that really matter on rights:
State of World Liberty Index (Nr 4)
The 27 countries in the world with the most freedom (Nr 6)
Countries by adherence to the Rule of Law according to the 2017–18 World Justice Project report (Nr 13)
What the right wing has forgotten is that individual rights only apply so long as they do not infringe on the rights of others. They ignore that second part, and define anything that protects the rights of individuals or groups that have long been oppressed as "taking away their rights".

LOL, tell that to the phone scammers who spoof their callers IDs..and the phone company does NOTHING about it when they easily could. Also, who determines what exactly constitutes "harm"? Why, the liberals in government, of course.

I think your comment is pretty typifying for quite a few Techspot posters, seeming only aware of what happens in the US and hardly aware what happens outside of it. The meanings of names and labels in politics differ across the world. Scott Morrison is a conservative.

This law is something the Tories in the UK could also have proposed. Politics isn't half as obvious as you make it out to be.

They have been going down the path of extreme leftism for many years. It's slowing destroying their country and removing citizen rights in favor of big government with more laws and restrictions. This was likely enacted due to "trolls" posting actual facts and pointing out the truth. Another way for government to shutdown free speech which is what the left does when they can't stand the truth.

Oh my god, the article could be about right handed gloves and you'd still find a way to make it about your baseless, crazed anti-left drivel. Go be mad somewhere else.

I could not agree more, but it does not mean you can make any statement you want, just because you are siting anonymously behind a computer, and say/do tings you would not get away in the real physical world.
SJW will kill the humanity.
Are you sure, not saying that SJW's are always right, sure there are some unreasonable righteous a-holes among them to, but imho is indifferens much worse, same for lying politicians that twist the truth just because it fits the popular ''political'' moment!

Absolutely. As I see it, this is what conservatives in the US fail to understand as they get butt hurt when they claim and if their posts are censored from certain sites.

In the US, what US conservatives seem to fail to understand, from MY perspective, is that the US Supreme Court has placed definite limits on 1st Amendment Rights (Free Speech). It seems to me that US conservatives will only support the law when the law agrees with their viewpoints. As a US Citizen, I think the US just barely got through an entire four years of a US Presidential Administration that thought nothing of twisting everything this his political moment. If he got his way, it would still, against a completely legal and valid election, be HIS political moment.

What we actually need is a digital bill of rights. A right to be able to keep our data private and to protect us from being persecuted over what we post. Currently police in most western states need a warrant and a good reason to search your property. But if they want to search your digital devices they can just go in and take them. This Australian government is basically making it mandatory to show ID when using the web, it’s disgusting, even more so than nasty comments from trolls. Currently someone can anonymously call you an expletive in public as we aren’t all required to wear name tags and most speech is legal. But apparently the same thing online is defamation? At what point does insulting someone become a crime?

Let’s be clear, if you can’t handle online trolls, don’t go online. Using the state to rid people of liberty, privacy and forcing others to bend to your needs is selfish and disgusting. As per with left wing policy in most countries around the world.

I really don't have much of a problem with this, even if anonymity is removed from the internet entirely. I'm no troll and I don't tell lies or make things up so what the hell do I care?

I would however LOVE to see the actual trolls get unmasked. Let's see how brave they are when threatened with action like this.

As for the verification issue, just make it mandatory to register in a manner that cannot be faked, like with a credit card (no pre-paid) or a subscribed cellphone (no burner phones).

This entire comment reads of heavy projection. Nothing you have written couldnt be equally applied to any democrat. Republicans are far from perfect, but to act like they are the only ones that willingly refuse to understand the rights of the american citizen is disengenuous at best.
What rights are they missing? unable to own a AR15? tell me why you need to own one?. What else is missing?
Well, when our government tried to force everyone to stay home for a year plus, and we told them to screw off, they LISTENED. This is something that mystifies most australians (and europeans as well) who go along with whatever insane BS their government comes up with. If the american people truly do not want something, the government listens to the people isntead of forcing it through anyway.

Also, when a mob of angry rioters comes into your neighboorhood, and the police do nothing to stop them, holding the big scary rifle makes them fall into line. Plenty of videos online that show the rabble rouses that burned minneapolis, chicago, st louis, portland, ece getting real quiet real quick when they went outside of their tiny urban comfort zones and found the local populace visibly armed.

Most americans, who pride themselves on having personal freedoms not reliant on big daddy government, find that to be reason enough.

Australians and Europeans governments listen to their people as well. It’s called elections. They have them, and then they respect them. Something Americans seem to have difficulties with lately.

Also, it is possible to consider both armed vigilantes and violent mobs undesirable. Somehow these seem less prevalent in other democratic societies. Maybe that is a good thing.

The same things happened during the flu pandemic of 1918. There was debate over whether masks helped even though there was plenty of evidence that they did help and there is plenty of evidence that they helped prevent the spread of COVID. So the lesson should have been learned in 1918. But yalllqaiduhs freedumb is more important than contributing to the prevention of the spread of the virus and not contributing to the deaths of your fellow citizens. Uh-huh. That's respecting the rights of your fellow citizens all right. So your argument is that the red side decided to ignore science and damn the rights of anyone that disagrees with you? That's what I call respecting rights - not.

And two prominent JAs got convicted for brandishing on video, no less. Oh, and peacfully storming the capital (that is, if you call peacefully breaking through barriers like doors and windows, beating capital police, not to mention spreading red feces where ever) is perfectly fine. I think your spin that all Democrats condoned the George Floyd violence is BS. But go ahead and deny there is a problem with how non-white people are treated by police in the US as if the outrage that boiled over and the deaths at the hands of police are not symptomatic enough.

I agree with @Beerfloat that there are plenty of "American rights loving Americans" that cannot live with the results of a fair and unbiased election. And before you try to argue that the election was rigged - numerous audits have been conducted and even those that were controlled by conservatives/republicans, and, as such, highly partizan, e.g., Arizona, NH, etc., found NO EVIDENCE of MASSIVE FRAUD that the orange clown claimed was the reason he lost, and kept losing in 60+ court cases - including being decided against by his "employees" of SCOTUS.
Most americans, who pride themselves on having personal freedoms not reliant on big daddy government, find that to be reason enough.
The simple truth of the matter is that "big daddy government" (talk about projection) is necessary in any modern civilization. Without that, I bet there would be plenty of people in the US, and elsewhere, who would welcome a return to a state of the state similar to how the movies have portrayed the Wild West days.

There are plenty of JAs out there on both sides, I agree. That's why the US founders established the structure of the government as it is.

No, Australia has had a right wing government for most of this century, getting progressively more secretive as time goes on. This is a distraction to stop voters thinking the government does nothing, all smoke and mirrors, because we have an election coming up.
