We all know that a lot is riding on the success of BlackBerry 10 for the Canadian-based handset maker. Most would agree that it’s sink or swim at this point. The life preservers have been tossed out in the form of the BlackBerry Z10 and early indications from a few key markets show the rebranded company still has plenty of fight left.

BlackBerry posted an official statement on their website earlier today outlining some initial sales figures for the latest handset. President and CEO Thorsten Heins said yesterday was the best day ever for the first day launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone in Canada. He didn’t give exact sales figures but he did say it was more than 50 percent better than any other BlackBerry launch in Canada’s history. Considering local loyalty over the years, that’s a pretty telling statement.

Furthermore, the executive pointed out that sales of the new BlackBerry handset in the UK are close to three times better than the previous best first week of sales. It certainly seems like BlackBerry is off to a good start, but will those sales records be replicated in other markets, namely in the US?

That remains to be seen as Android, iOS and Windows Phone have pretty much the entire US market locked up. Early reviews of the Z10 show promise but there are still some holes that the company needs to patch in the proverbial ship to keep it sailing ahead for the foreseeable future.

Loved playing with the bezel. Potentially replaces several buttons right there (especially the home button)...

The ecosystem of BB is broken, but the sales surge, does it mean the consumer is silly?

Maybe once they notice there's some major flaws.. rumors might spread and possibly kill off any interest? Who knows.. there's a lot of possible speculation, as it's their last salvation of sorts to stay alive.

Canadian patriotic desperadoes :) They must have "Buy BB" proclamations on every post pole there :)

I disagree though... BB is going after a market that's been mildly ignored by the smartphone industry, and that's the business user. Android and iOS are great for social devices, and they work just fine for most business uses, but many people would want something that's dedicated to their needs. This is what MS is trying to do in the tablet market with the Surface.

Does this mean it's going to be wildly successful and everyone has so far missed out on some huge market segment? No, I don't think so. But BB doesn't need to make $10b a quarter in profit like Samsung, Google, and Apple. If they make $1b a year, it'll be a success.

Finally someone with some common sense great post!

Was told today my relative actually has just lost his contract with BB because the hardware plant will be in hands of Lenovo, so Canadian content makes so much less sense now!

The hatred of Microsoft will overwhelm all of its Propaganda efforts. Blackberry is very well positioned to capitalize upon this animosity. Plus, their products are bafflingly obtuse. Blackberry 10 is Enterprise AND
user-friendly. Windows 8 is garbage.

So enterprise Home Depot ditched Blackberry as their corporate messaging platform in favor to Apple!
