Campers arrive at Micro Center for Nvidia RTX 5090 and 5080 GPUs days before launch

WTF?! The general sense of disappointment at the RTX 5090's performance improvement compared to its price increase hasn't stopped hardcore gamers (and probably some scalpers) from camping outside Micro Center locations to buy one of the cards – or the RTX 5080 – days before they launch.

Both the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launch on Thursday. There have been reports that supply of cards will be severely limited, with some retailers holding inventory the in single- or double-digit figures, though it's expected to improve in February.

As is so often the case when a product's demand is expected to far outweigh its supply, people were pitching tents outside stores days ahead of the cards' release. Reddit and the Unofficial Micro Center Discord channel show that the lines started appearing outside of Micro Center's Tustin, California, location yesterday, despite the RTX 5090/5080 not arriving until January 30.

Campers already appeared

One of the campers posted on the Reddit thread that they were in the second tent with other people, and that they were buying a card for their own use. "We just don't want to pay for that extra $ for a gaming card and yes we do have some times on our hands because we run a business. Good luck to everyone who are trying to get one."

While there will be plenty of genuine gamers braving the elements to secure a 5000-series card at launch, it's likely that at least some of those in line will be scalpers.

It should come as little surprise to see eBay populated with listings for both the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. These are described as pre-sale reservations for the cards, with the most expensive 5090 (MSRP $2,000) listed for $6,100 and the 5080 ($999 MSRP) at $2,200.

Micro Center says it will use a voucher system on launch day. These will be distributed to customers on a first-come, first-serve basis shortly before the store opens. A voucher guarantees the ability to purchase a GPU – only one card can be purchased per customer – but does not guarantee a specific model or manufacturer. The company warns that lines are likely. It also says it discourages camping outside its stores, though obviously doesn't disallow the practice.

The image brings back memories of similar scenes, particularly during the height of Covid. There was chaos in June 2021 when a Micro Center store in Dallas restocked RTX 3000 cards that had become almost impossible to buy during the chip crisis. The same thing happened during the RTX 3070 launch in 2020.

Our review of the RTX 5090 shows that it is 25% more expensive than the RTX 4090 while delivering an average of 27% more performance.

This is why Nvidia doesn't bother to innovate on gaming GPUs. Nv*****s will buy newest cards anyway. And then some say AMD should make better cards. Yeah, why should AMD bother?

All that glitters is not gold, and patience often proves wise.
As long as people continue to reward this kind of behavior and pay these kinds of prices, it’s bound to grow worse.

The world is constantly evolving, bringing changes, some for the better, and others less so.

If the 5090 starts of being as hard to come by as the 4090 was (it took almost 2 months before they started to accumulate on shelves) I can see how it could be very enticing for some people to want to do a quick double or maybe triple their money by scalping a 5090.

You do get those freaks that are just about the epeen. Look what I got! Look at me! ME!!!!! They want to be able to brag about how they just dropped nearly $2200 (after taxes, at least here in MN) on a 5090 and can now max out games that their 4090 just can't do because it only uses DLSS3.

And you do have a small portion of people that will quietly obtain a 5090 and use it and no one else in the world will know they have it because they're about playing and not bragging.

Going off the original 4080 cards not selling when they first hit the shelves, they sat on the shelves, barely selling for weeks/months. Sure, people will buy the 5080, but right now we don't know how it actually performs and I don't think they'll be a clamoring for the 5080 like there will be for the 5090.

The voucher system is a nice touch, but let’s be real—by the time you get to the front of the line, all that’s left will probably be a single Zotac card with weird RGB lighting no one asked for.

My MC doesn't let you do this anymore iirc. Somebody wanted to buy the spots in the front of the line, they got denied and came back with a paintball gun, can't remember if they were frozen or not and shot em up in the line. QR Voucher system was born.

Now, our voucher system was a paper voucher at first then after the paintball incident they didn't want people lining up outside so they went with a scannable QR code line, you would get a text when your opportunity was near. The paper voucher at first for the 3070 was kind of ridiculous, they wouldn't let you pick a brand or model, you just had to take whatever voucher they handed you. They sold my voucher out from underneath me once so they sold me a better model at the lower price.

Probably the sent more to reviewers than will be available to buy :)

Predictions another paper launch ?? most sold elsewhere

With my usual foggy thinking - I actually had an epiphany the other day

Most of the people whining about AMD not competing this gen with Nvidia at least at 5080 level are by mostly Nvidia fan boys
ie they won't buy a AMD card they just want price pressure on Nvidia to get a cheaper NVIDIA card
people who like AMD bought the 6900 and 7900 variations for great prices and got very good rasterization performances , that they knew had a good chance to get better over time , given Nvidia loaded dice with certain games

It's below freezing here. Anyone who wants to wait out in sub-freezing weather to pull out a credit card and buy a $2000 - $3000 card to play their lackluster games 5% prettier...

...just know you help the economy move.

You are the real hero.

I demonstrated (personally) to my younger cousin (with receipts) that if he took the $1955 (with tax) I used to buy him and myself a 3090 and put it into pre-split Nvidia stock, right now he'd have over $15,000 that he could sell a small portion of and buy the 5090 while pocketing $13,000.

The opportunity cost here is remarkable.

The 4090 was released in October 2022.

Nvidia did their split in June 2024.

Imagine shoveling $4000 or more into Nvidia before it split.

I actually have a graph that shows how much you'd have gained and it's heartbreaking.
