WTF?! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a wearable robotic tail that could improve your agility and balance? In all likelihood, no—it’s probably something you’ve never considered unless you’re a Furry and into that kind of thing. But Researchers at Keio University in Japan have created such a device.

The prototype, called Arque, was on show at the 2019 SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles last week. While it might bring to mind the tails of dogs and cats, its inspiration comes from seahorses.

The appendage is made up of several interconnected plastic vertebrae, and it can be customized depending on a wearer’s weight and height by adding or removing more segments. Small weights can be inserted inside each vertebra to help offset the wearer’s weight, allowing them to stay balanced when moving quickly or carrying heavy objects, writes Fast Company.

The tail is powered by four artificial muscles, which contract and expand using an external pressurized air system. Requiring an external compressor does mean it’s not exactly mobile right now, but, as noted by Gizmodo, advances in artificial muscles mean future iterations might be powered by just a battery.

A mobile version of the Arque could have several applications, such as assisting construction and warehouse workers in lifting and carrying heavy objects, or as a device for helping people who have trouble balancing. It could even be used in conjunction with virtual reality titles, swaying users’ bodies to match what’s happening within a game.

Will need an extra front limb to balance that one out, unless the nature gave you one already.

Well, evolution removed the tails from our predecessors millions of years ago. So, it's possible we don't really need them.

That's not to mention the fact that crap hanging off of your a** would have to be removed each and every time you had to poop, and then there's the intense backaches that robo-junk would likely give you.

If that thing is supposed to balance heavy objects, that means you are effectively carrying nearly twice as much weight as the object. That can't be good in the long run. One solution would be to carry lighter objects but then you really wouldn't need that thing in the first place.

Well, every millennial "scientist" thinks he or she is going to become the next "dot.com billionaire". couple with that the dull wit people today have concerning scientific "progress". The pervasive concept is that, "if it's new it's good, and so long as so says so, then I need one. But people do make tons of money, hawking patently stupid things, garbage ideas, and bizarre concepts on YouTube all day long.

My take on it is this, "if you eat enough Tide Pods, you'll grow a tail anyway".

As for warehouse workers, can you say, "fork lift"?

You really honor your nickname eh?

No you're using my screen as an excuse because you have nothing to really dispute or rebut what I've said.

Anthropologists have told us for decades that our success as a species began when we lost our tails, and learned to walk upright. This freed up our opposable thumbs to perform complex tasks Since then, we have become the apex predator on the planet.

As for warehouses, al that sh!t would do, is cause workers to walk out. in protest. Enable them to pick up twice the weight as before? Yeah, that'll fly...like a lead balloon.

The most salient point of that crap idea, is the fact the warehouse workers would have to build up massive upper body strength to compensate for the supposed extra lifting ability this abomination would provide them. I'm pretty you're not going to force them to go to the gym and work out until they look like pro wrestlers. If a box is too big to move by one person, then you ask for help, or yes, call a fork lift

So, IMHO, this "inventor" is nothing more than a dot.com jacka**, and an over educated publicity monger, but lacking practical sense.

Because this person thinks this is a world changing concept, no one else is obligated to agree with him.

Feel free to assume whatever you please, as to how that attaches to my screen.

This is just my humble opinion. but if the tail was correctly aligned with the spine then in theory it would improve backache as the spine would not compress as much when lifting heavy weights.

That said, it would be no good for Industry. Likely you would end up knocking people or objects over with the tail while moving around.

Although, if the tail was fitted with proximity sensors and some decent Ai.. and also have decent flexibility. it could make a decent fall protection device.

I'm still going with my idea that upper body strength would have to be improved, to actualize any gains from having a tail. The tail is a burden in and of itself with respect to the back, although granted it is on a different force axis. For the sake of argument, for the tail to be of any value for relief of stress on the back, it's tip would have to be on a roller anyway.

If the person was on a ladder, it would most certainly be a liability.

My overall point is, we're not kangaroos, and while we don't have tails, we're still, (in general), more dexterous than them.

This is not about the practical use of a robotic tail, I mean what's the problem about scientist or whoever trying to create something for a purpose that you see as useless? if it's not with our taxes I say they can do whatever they want and probably one of those things can be in fact of use, I wouldn't jump into conclusions just for a concept or a prototype. Telling them to f*** off just because the idea "seems" dumb is not the solution, that's what I think.

I did't tell them to stop, did I? I just gave my opinion.

See, I think you just saw my screen name, and you thought you'd like to start an argument. Trust me, I'm here for you, if that's the case.

Beyond that, I think you should put your money where your mouth is, and cut these douches a big, fat, check.. That way, you'll feel like you're part of something great, even if it flops, (or flips, or wags, or drags on the ground, whatever robotic tails do these days).

That's true, probably we should still be using candles and horses, imagine people inventing anything useful or at least trying. I've always said that there are people that don't see any changes in the world besides cars, TVs and cellphones, great I'm not one of them.

Hey, if they won't sell you a tail, maybe you could rent one.(y) (Y)

By the same token, I'm thankful that I'm not some fool that has to follow very bizarre trend that comes off the internet.

BTW, they are still using draft horses for some logging operations. The horses do less damage to the environment than the bulldozers, tractors, and whatnot, they use to extract the logs by machine.

Oh, and before I forget, even the horses don't use the tails they were born with, to do this type of work.

That's great about the horses we can probably introduce things like that in other ways, I imagine someone has to try even though it would be ridiculed by some.

Quite simply, I have nothing against new ideas. Otherwise, I would have bought a mechanical typewriter instead of a half dozen computers, and left it at that. I have absolutely no need for a smartphone, and thus don't own one. Since I'm not texting or talking on a cell phone while I'm driving, I can keep my own car in the middle on my lane, no problem.

But in certain conditions, the center of the lane is the worst place you can possibly be. In rain, on uncrowded roads, water collects in the depressions created by everyone, "driving in the center on the lane", (also known as "ponding").
So, you can take that $500.00(?) dollar option, and stuff it.

Where should you drive in the rain? Most likely with one set of wheels dead on the lane divider stripe, the other set of wheels on the hump in between the two lane grooves. That leaves you high and dry, in control, and nothing out of pocket, for whatever the option fee may be for the lane centering option

But I am against ideas which are poorly thought out, introduced to sell a newer model of the same old sh!t, or ideas that are really seeking a use, and not uses needing a solution.

1: So, we lost our tails when we came out of the trees, which established anthropology tells use was a, ""great idea".

2: More importantly, the first photo in the topic, shows one of these fools bending over at the waist. If he's trying to illustrate "picking up a heavy object" from that position, .he'll ruin his back, with or without a tail. You always lift heavy objects with your >> legs.

3: What the hell good would a tail do you on a ladder? It shifts your CG backwards, with the potential of pulling you backwards off the ladder. So, unless the tail is prehensile, it's of no use..

4: (And most importantly) All human lifting operations depend on upper body strength, leg strength, and center of gravity.

You can't make the tail heavy enough to shift your CG backwards, without causing more stress and fatigue on the workers. Think of this a using a balance pole on a tightrope,(save for the fact it's sticking out of your behind).

Just as importantly, women want the "same wages for the same work". But if it's warehouse work we're talking about, will they be willing to hit the gym so they can do the same amount, (give or take), as the "long shore man types", that typically inhabit these occupations. After all, we're trying to make the claim these tails will, "enable us to pick up heavier objects". Just be ready for the ramifications that would introduce.

Our coccyx bones are the vestiges of the tails we once had. That being said, our minds more than likely shed the ability to control a tail along with it. Thus, even with mental implants, our brains likely don;t still have the instructions resident to control one. Yeah, yeah, I know, "AI:. But when you have something hanging off your butt that has to think for you, again, count me out.

The tail idea is poorly thought out, IMHO, final answer.

So, while doing stuff because you can is fine by me, just don't try to market it to me as, "the next big thing".

I would encourage you to pretend you're in a warehouse, with a tail, and tell me how you perceive the experience.
