Computer Slow

All of a sudden, my computer is acting strange. There is an intermittent delay when entering text or clicking on something. The only thing I have downloaded is an Earthlink update. I am going to remove and reinstall Earthlink tonight to see if that is the problem. I'm running XP SP1. I've run my spyware programs and virus checkers and found nothing. When I do Ctl-Alt-Del and click on resources, I see that every few seconds the CPU usage spikes to 100% so I assume something is running in the background that is interfering. Can someone give me some suggestions as to how to find and fix this problem.

Thanks in advance.

In task manager, go to processes, watch to see which process is spikeing. If you don't need the program running, close it.

Whats your computer specs? Can you please fill up your profile with your computer specifications?

Your computer specifications will help us a lot in pin pointing the problem.

Look for any suspicious processes that are running under task manager. Sometimes virus scanners don't detect some sneakier trojans and viruses.

Thanks all. Apparantly the problem was the Spyware program from Earthlink running in the background. For some reason it was using all my resources every few minutes. I disabled at start-up through msconfig and now everything seems fine.
