Crytek could leave Germany due to violent game ban

With popular franchises like Far Cry and Crysis in its portfolio, Crytek is one of the biggest game developers in Germany – but that could change soon if sixteen interior ministers have their way. Commenting on the country’s current parliamentary attempt to enforce a ban on violent videogames, Crytek president and co-founder Cevat Yerli has said such a move would force the prominent studio to relocate.

The proposed ban would not only prevent the sale of violent videogames throughout the country, but also make it illegal for developers to even produce such content. Although having Crytek take its business elsewhere wouldn’t exactly be in Germany’s best interest, the current goal is to pass the proposal into law by September.

Germany has traditionally had strict standards and regulation of what it considers excessively violent video games. All the more so after a recent school shooting in which one FPS fan killed sixteen people, it’s reasonable to believe the Bundestag (the country’s equivalent of Parliament) could back such radical action. In the meantime, a petition against the ban has been signed by over 64,000 Germans, and apparently the government is required to officially review petitions signed by over 50,000 people.

Id certainly move if this kind of thing happened where I live, ESPECIALLY if a law were being passed against a portion of what I do for a job.

they allready have ties with the UK, makes sence to move all there operations here (the UK) don't you think!

That just sounds stupid. Banning all violent games from a country, why stop there? No alcohol, no cigarettes no fast food we will all live of pills?
I think it sounds stupid.

I think the best place would be in Malta as it is in the center of the Mediterranean. This would increase its people from around all Europe as it is central for everyone.

How retarded. They can have places for cannibals to congregate, but violent video games are a strict no-no?!

Fascism returns to Germany then? I astounds me to see that the moronic interior ministers believe they can blame extreme violence within their school system on video games.
I guess it's nothing new, these kind of accusations have been going on for years now. I suppose it's easier to blame 3rd parties than to deal with the core problems within society. Just because a kid plays Counterstrike, doesn't mean that’s why he would decide to shoot his class mates.
These kind of actions stem from social, mental & educational problems. What next.....ban violent movies & any other visual stimuli that may cause a perfectly normal individual to turn into a gun wielding assassin?

I'd be more concerned about the extreme & violent pornography produced & distributed in Germany, let alone where he was able to acquire a gun from?

These so called leaders make me sick.

If i kid was never introduced to tv, movies, or video games would he still kill kids in his class, even if his peers were the same. But to be honest if a person kills someone, its not because of violent game, something is wrong with them mentally.

really europe, and brussels minded,no violence on the screen, only in towns, streets, and only protection ,rights and fun for politics(=corrupt people),and big ceo &exe&royaltys!the rest,we should tolerate more, pay more, work faster, longer, cheaper, and die young, without children.and if we have children, they get killed in nurserary's,daycare,or must survive with 300euros pro month, with no expectations of work or future at all! it seems that one good event, could happen in the near future, thats dec. 2012,then this organised **** would end for ever, with a little luck!!,thanks Herr FUHRER?Mr.PRESIDENT?MINISTERS?KINGS and other in command of europe and the world, for the mess untill then, sorry ,again, some people will lose their job and cosy life, thei are not alo,e!!!

I find it surprising that a country like Germany would be in fear of a game especially looking at the

stuff they allowed in the nongame world. Yet if this is true and here in the U.S. if our Government

continues to take away our right to bare arms, we might all be leaving. As one native american

said " Our Government has told us the truth sence 1492. White mans government has not in that

same amount of time" "If you loose your right under the second amendment you will loose your

country too" So you are afraid of a game, wow sound like the French, "Duck and run?

You grab Koreans by the neck and throw them, killing them instantly on impact. What's not to notice? This is the first game that's introduced such a thing. C'mon, it's not like they're gonna loose up international relations, like they're near any relevant nations.

Come back to your home country, Turkey. Turkey needs a company like yours, I'm sure you'll get whatever support you need from the government. You might end up being exempt of taxes and find the talent you need at a much lower cost than elsewhere in Eu or Usa.

What is with people? Doesn't anybody know how to spell a simple work like lose?

No come singapore instead, it is ranked one of the best in the world, in terms of transport ,businesses anyhow, just in 44 years, other countries can't even reach its mark and ability, and they take forever..ever..ever..ever.

It is the people signing petitions who put pressure on a democratic government it seems.

Yet if you come to Malta we would gladly welcome you :) We do need foreign investment. I am sure that most other countries will welcome you too !! And I do not think that people would sign petitions, trying to point a finger and blame these companies. Parents who do not monitor what their children are doing cannot blame Crytek for their shortcomings.
