Epic may launch app store to challenge Apple and Google

Why it matters: If successful, Epic's app store could force Google to lower its commission cut. This, in turn, would probably prompt Apple to do the same, leaving more money in developers’ pockets. How will app stores recoup their losses?

Epic earlier this month launched the Epic Games Store, a digital storefront for PC games on Windows and macOS. The store is already making waves but Epic isn’t done shaking up the waters just yet.

According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, Epic will start selling games for Android devices in 2019. Taken at face value, the Journal’s wording suggests Epic only plans to sell Android games but a broader move into a general app store may also be a possibility.

Apple and Google take a 30 percent cut of revenue from apps sold through their respective app stores. Epic, in contrast, only grabs 12 percent of revenue generated from its Games Store, leaving developers with 88 percent.

Epic also bypassed Google’s store with the launch of Fortnite for Android. Given the success of that game, it’s plausible that Epic could generate significant traffic with its own app store.

Research firm Visible Alpha indicates Apple and Google parent company Alphabet generate about five percent of annual revenue from their app stores. Since neither company makes the apps they sell, however, their margin contribution is much higher. As such, Ben Schachter of Macquarie Capital believes that the hit to pretax earnings could be as high as 14 percent if the stores were to reduce app commissions to match Epic’s take.

Yeah, I doubt it. Apple is perfectly fine with their walled garden (and only) appstore on their phones.

But if their hand is somehow forced, they'll definitely spin it as their innovative idea...

Epic is cruisin for an epic bruisin with their $3 billion aren't they. lol

Yeah let us know when Apple or Google figures out how to compete with Unreal. Epic owns their market for a very good reason. They "went big" back in the late 90s when it counted and have never looked back.

You being serious? Look at Apple and Google's worth.

Plus, your analogy doesn't make sense either. Epic is walking into Apple/Google's house with an app store. Developers who bank on Epic will likely see dramatically reduced sales ---- and therefore less money even with a lower cut.

It's the same reason why Amazon's app store hasn't threatened Google (and Amazon knows far more about apps and retail than Epic).

Excatly, its the homefield advantage for Apple/Google. Each device comes with their store apps and most users will simply download stuff from default store instead of bothering to install a whole new store to save 50 cents. Most apps are free so that doesn't even matter unless they come with some other innovative monetization scheme.

More like Epic doesn't know what to do with their new found wealth.

Instead of developing a new Unreal game they have their sights set on conqering the various online storefronts.

They need to get their priorities in order. Epic is a game developer first and foremost.
A lot of their loyal fan base who have followed them over the years have lost hope. 12 year olds on fortsh*te are all they care about. Kids who were in ballsacks when Epic was showcasing Gears.

Smh.

Epic needs to pick it's battles. It's not a wise idea to take on Steam, Apple, and Google all at the same time. Fortnite is nice but it isn't even a drop in the barrel compared to what Google makes.

They need to develop a new Unreal Engine or give us Half Life 3 if they want to be anything more than a Fortnite store.

side note - I had never seen Fortnite until the other day and it's just blatant rip off of PUBG, another game I would never play.

Dear Epic,

Don't do this. You will fail lol. Instead, start development on a new Unreal Tournament. Kthx.
