Format hard drive

Just bought zmodo surveillance system, hook it up, says hard drive not formatted, formatting fails every time. Can't get thru to tech support, has seagate 500gb installed, can I install in another lap top & format hd?

Recommend doing only what the manual says... you do not want to void warranty in case it is not good unit.
