Gabe Newell confirms Source 2 engine, says it will be entirely new

Valve boss Gabe Newell recently took the time to meet with several fans from 4chan at the company’s Washington headquarters. Considering it was his birthday, the group put together a real-life Mann Co. crate complete with a Team Fortress 2 hat inside (which he was asked to pay $2.50 to open, heh) and sang him happy birthday.

Afterwards, Newell stuck around to field questions from the crowd (sorry, no Half-Life 3 inquires were permitted). Not wanting to disappoint, the first question was about Valve’s rumored new game engine. Source 2, as some on the Interwebs are calling it, is indeed a real project. Newell said they have been working on new engine stuff for a while now.

The next bit of audio about the engine is a bit tough to make out but the video’s subtitle says they’ve been waiting on a game to roll it out with. Another person asked if it was going to just be an update to source or if they were planning an entirely new engine. Newell simply replied “yeah” as in, it will be a new engine from the ground-up.

Earlier this year the group from ValveTime.net discovered references to a Source 2 engine inside Valve’s Source Filmmaker editing tool. They also found a number of tool icons labeled as Source 2 tools, all but confirming that a new engine was in development, possibly even in the later stages. The original Source engine launched roughly eight years ago and has been used for a number of hit titles but given its age, most feel that a revision is certainly in order.

Can't wait! Valve has been very good about pushing the gaming experience before ultimate graphics, so that more gamers have easy accessibility to the valve titles. That said, it's definitely time for a relaunch of the engine!

Gabe Newell is the man!!! My man!!! LOL. I wonder if Source Engine 2 will work out of the box on Linux based operating systems. That would be sweet. Give Microsoft a nice big fat middle finger for pushing Windows 8 on all of us.

Please elaborate in which way Microsoft is pushing Windows 8 on all of us? They made an OS, they released it, if you don't want to use it then don't use it.

By assuming that people who have been using a Microsoft Windows operating system for the past twenty years with a keyboard and mouse as their primary means of input would simply roll over like little <censored> and accept touch as a primary replacement. That's who I was referring to when I said 'all of us'. But that was figuratively speaking. Obviously, some people are enjoying their Windows 8 masterpiece. :)

You give very good advice though. I would have taken your advice had I not already made that decision long ago. Still good advice for people on the fence though. So thanks for that. :)

Except that, you know, mouse and keyboard works perfectly fine on Windows 8. Microsoft added another means of interacting with the computing world. They didn't take anything away. Mouse? Keyboard? Touch pad? Touch screen? They all work.

Are you being deliberately obtuse, Guest? You completely failed to acknowledge RHOOD's point that no-one is pushing Windows 8 on anyone. If you don't like it, don't use it, stick with your existing preferred Windows version or use an alternative like OSX, Linux, whatever.

On a side note, as treeski pointed out keyboard and mouse still works on Windows 8, and it's already sold four million copies and become the fastest selling version of Windows yet (which admittedly happens with every new version, simply due to increased computer sales, but still, hardly the failure the haters wish it was).

My response:

Whatever you gotta tell yourself to convince yourself that you like Windows 8, you go right ahead. I am happy using Windows 7 and you are happy using Windows 8. It's a beautiful world, is it not? :)

Its probably not wise to praise Windows 8 for 4 million sales and then negate your point in the same breath with a dose of reality. But hey, whatever works for you.

Why am I starting to get the sense that the people who have actually upgraded to Windows 8 are more angry inside than people, like myself, who haven't upgraded? Oh, because they got duped and I didn't. :)

Actually, if you read a little, they are trying to push it down peoples throat.
No Service Pack 2 release for Windows 7.
No DirectX 11.1 release for Windows 7.

The reason for these moves is to precisely PUSH Windows 8.

Have you gone to a computer store recently, where are all the Windows 7 machines?

How about the 1.5 billion dollar marketing budget to convince people they need to buy it, even though it is the only thing you can get from the stores.

You mean other than the fact that (as they did with Vista and XP) MS appears to be set on only advancing DirectX functionality on Windows8 from now on? Since this is a conversation about gaming, that's a very relevant little nugget to consider... Just sayin.

Watch closely for their other winning marketing strategies, like making arrangements with OEMs to offer exclusively "Made for Windows 8" hardware, and pre-built Windows 7 systems suddenly becoming incredibly scarce. It will be interesting to see if this turns into another heavy-handed upgrade push like Vista was. :)

"Oh, and as usual, the Guest is the troll."

You mean the guests(plural) are the trolls. I would like to take credit for both posts but I cannot tell a lie. I am only responsible for posts #2, #4, and #7.

And I would have no problem whatsoever using my real account name except that I have been banned from posting on this website for the past few months. :) So, I can only post as a guest.

Discontinuing an old version of software and selling your new one still doesn't classify as "pushing" it on users, it's just standard practice. I didn't contradict myself, Windows 8 is a success already, the fact this was guaranteed anyway due to how the market works is incidental. The fact is the haters who want it to fail and Microsoft to do a U-turn need a reality check. I also never started that I use Windows 8 (I don't at present, but I used the preview for months and it was fine).

What? a troll is banned for a few months?

thanks the almighty bruce I'm a different "guest".

the topic is on a new source engine.
then it became about ms pushing windows 8 on all of us. (figuratively speaking, of course :) )

I love shrek but I'm glad I'm in my zen garden.

Yeah, that's because it doesn't. They tell themselves that to justify their decisions. It's pathetic, yet understandable.

Gabe, Please, I beg you, Please show, even 10 seconds of Half-Life 3 / Half-Life 2: EP2 of game play...
Please...
I beg...

I do think Microsoft is pushing Windows 8 but that's what they do as all businesses push out whatever is going to make them the most money. It's about how Microsoft can make the most money not how Microsoft can serve it's customers.

No, I'm not afraid of change however Windows 8 doesn't add anything for me. Maybe it helps you so great enjoy it but let me enjoy Windows 7 or any other OS that pleases me. Let's not make personal attacks on people for making other choices in life.

For you all who desire to debate windows 8 and saying it fails, or is superior, none of you are giving any real reasons as to why one should choose one or the other. "oh uh sales blah blah" "oh uh, no touchy on my pooter" Give me a break!

Heres the DL for you. Windows 8, for users with absolutely no touch interface what so ever, in its stock, base form, is a headache for users who have used windows since Windows 95 (and even those since 3.1) The entire "Start" screen, should have a toggle. And by toggle I mean a way without free-ware, to get rid of it and return to the original "Start Menu" style of windows. Other than that whole entire fiasco with windows 8, there is nothing wrong with it. It is essentially an updated Windows 7 with sharp edges, and harder to find system tools. (for people who do more than watch cat videos all day) Oh yea, and it has that awful "Start" screen that is 100% designed for touch "but it supports your mouse too" junk. The OS as a whole, is alot better without it. But seeing as M$ decided to break into the tablet market, and touch screen market.... WAY TO GO FOR MAKIN YOURSELVES MONEY! Not give me an update with a damn toggle...

On the Source 2 side of life (reason any of us are here) My only concern is if Valve will find a way to update the existing Source 1 games with the Source 2 engine. That is all I care about. Other than that. Hurray for more Valve games!
