Game Pass ads infiltrating in the Windows 11 Settings app is just too much

WTF?! Microsoft just dropped another monthly Windows 11 update. The KB5039302 patch landed this week, bumping up 22H2 builds to version 22621.3810 and 23H2 builds to 22631.3810. While security fixes are always welcome, this particular build packs a sneaky little change that's bound to invite backlash – a 'Game Pass recommendation card' advertisement is shown right into the Windows 11 Settings app.

The Windows update is being rolled out gradually but once it hits your system, you'll likely see the intrusive card on the Settings home page, advertising Microsoft's Game Pass subscription service. The company tested this with Insiders for a couple of months, and it seems they're ready to let it loose on more unsuspecting users now.

While the new patch is expected to roll out widely in July, not everyone will be treated to the Game Pass card. Microsoft suggests it only graces the presence of "true gamers."

"This update adds a new Game Pass recommendation card on the Settings home page. This home page shows on Home and Pro editions when you sign in to Windows using your Microsoft account. The card appears if you actively play games on your PC," notes the company on its changelog.

Well, at least Microsoft seems smart enough not to bother non-gamers with the Game Pass ads. From an advertising standpoint, it makes sense to only surface those recommendations to users who actually play games on their PC. Why show irrelevant promotions to folks who'll likely never subscribe?

A more selective strategy could also help reduce any potential backlash for this move. Microsoft already has enough blood on its hands for all the new clutter it's introduced across the Start menu, taskbar, and other system areas. And of course, the damned ads.

Lest you think it's all controversy with this update, it also brings the highly-anticipated context menu options to create compressed archives with just a few clicks. When you right-click on a file, the "Compress to" item now offers tools like gzip, bzip2, and more. There's even a compression wizard under "Additional options" to guide you through different formats, compression levels, and archiving multiple file types into TAR containers.

The Copilot experience is leveling up, too, with the tool now pinned to the taskbar like an app for true windowed functionality. You can resize, move, and snap that window however you like. Current builds only launch a static pane that sticks to the right of the screen.

Other fresh capabilities include the new redesigned account manager in the Start menu, support for Unicode's latest Emoji 15.1 standard, and various performance enhancements and bug fixes for things like Group Policy, OneDrive integration, and Storage Spaces.

Aren’t all ads supposed to be targeted? Isn’t that why they capture all our information to give us relevant information? Naw. The fire hose approach generates much more income if not just through inadvertent clicks. That will be phase 2 after Microsoft gets everyone used to a few relevant ads. My PC runs Linux Mint and I hope Linux never gets so popular that it begins to suffer ad-nauseam like Microsoft Windows is trying to do.

Seriously what is going on with these people in charge?
Who in their right mind asked for this? I can tell you one thing: there isn't one legitimate consumer that was like: 'you know what I'm missing? Ads in my settings menu. Man I just wish that windows tries to sell me more **** and intrudes my personal space.'

Ffs microsoft is one of the most valuable companies on the planet. WHY can't these A-holes ever back down with the constant streak of greed. All they're doing in the end is making their product worse and worse, turning into a joke of a company.
Where are all the people that focus on the user experience? Ffs.
I never bought anything in the Microsoft store because it's such a locked down abomination.
I'm so sick of this ****.

It looks they are or will sell all the other Microsoft services on this page as well. My Settings top level has cards for Microsoft 365, Game Pass, and Cloud Storage.

But if you want to see some really, really cheesy ads, try playing Windows Solitaire for a few minutes. Ads for cash casino apps, etc. Did someone at Microsoft really want to get into bed with those folks? Did they brag about extra $0.0000003 per share earnings they generate at their board meeting?

The way things are going, everytime I open some folder or window, MS will show me ads about their stuff lol. Good thing there are many free software apps that stop this with a single button!

Ads on a free OS, I can't complain. Ads on a paid for OS, that is something else. MS is bombarding people with Game Pass ads everywhere. For example, I launched the MS store, and the first thing that greeted me was to start my Game Pass trial. I feel it is becoming overly intrusive.

Game pass sucks. Assuming you are a moderate gamer who does not have to try every new (b rated game), you will waste money paying for it. I see more and more people go back to replay or discover old games hcih are cheap, and you can keep them forever.
Gaming subscription is not the same as movie streaming service.

This is what happen when the subscription numbers flatten and the company run on a model of growth at all cost.
Microsoft is locked in a self-perpetuating model of decline. They want more users, but they're engaging in activities that scare off users and they are not willing to backtrack. It's an example of the dense leading the deaf leading the mentally lacking.

The same goes for Google, also among the top 5 companies in the world with BILLIONS in revenue each year, and still they are pushing more persistent ads in search and youtube and trying to prevent ad blockers from working. even if you get less 1% revenue, you are still among top 5 in the world, STOP THE GREED
