Google abandons 'do no harm' AI stance, opens door to military weapons

A hot potato: Google has come a long way since its early days when "Don't be evil" was its guiding principle. This departure has been duly noted before for various reasons. In its latest departure from its original ethos, the company has quietly removed a key passage from its AI principles that previously committed to avoiding the use of AI in potentially harmful applications, including weapons.

This change, first noticed by Bloomberg, marks a shift from the company's earlier stance on responsible AI development.

The now-deleted section titled "AI applications we will not pursue" had explicitly stated that Google would refrain from developing technologies "that cause or are likely to cause overall harm," with weapons being a specific example.

In response to inquiries about the change, Google pointed to a blog post published by James Manyika, a senior vice president at Google, and Demis Hassabis, who leads Google DeepMind.

The post said that democracies should lead AI development, guided by core values such as freedom, equality, and respect for human rights. It also called for collaboration among companies, governments, and organizations sharing these values to create AI that protects people, promotes global growth, and supports national security.

This shift in Google's AI principles has not gone unnoticed by experts in the field. Margaret Mitchell, former co-lead of Google's ethical AI team and current chief ethics scientist at Hugging Face, told Bloomberg she was concerned about the implications of removing the "harm" clause. "[It] means Google will probably now work on deploying technology directly that can kill people," she said.

Google's revision of its AI principles is part of a larger trend among tech giants to abandon previously held ethical positions. Companies like Meta Platforms and Amazon have recently scaled back their diversity and inclusion efforts, citing outdated or shifting priorities. Moreover, Meta announced last month that it was ending its third-party fact-checking program in the U.S.

Even though Google has maintained that its AI is not used to harm humans until very recently, the company has been gradually moving towards increased collaboration with military entities. Recent years have seen the company providing cloud services to the U.S. and Israeli militaries, decisions that have sparked internal protests from employees.

Google surely expects to receive backlash for its latest position. More than likely, it has concluded the benefits of its revised stance outweigh the negatives. The tech giant can now compete more directly with rivals already involved in military AI projects, for starters. Also, the shift could lead to increased research and development funding from government sources, potentially accelerating Google's AI advancements.

I can see Trump's dirty hands involved in Google's "sudden" change of mind.

That Doomsday clock must gotten closer right about now.....

“The sky is falling the sky is falling!! Orange man bad!”

Google didn’t decide to do this on a whim, this shift started over a decade ago.

Plus, I guarantee you our enemies have been working in this mindset this for at least a decade if not longer. If anything, Trump restricting technology exports to China (which Biden maintained, need I remind you) were clear evidence that he saw this sort of thing coming from them back then.

Contrary to popular belief, America isn’t the only country on the planet. There are in fact other countries and/or sects who genuinely want to destroy us. Their aggression as well as their stance on human rights would make Mean Orange Man (“he makes me super sad!”) look like the lovechild of Mahatma Ghandi and Ruth Bader Ginsburg to you.

Nice, let machines decide who is allowed to live or die.

If something go wrong who will be accountable?

Great news, welcome to Technocracy and degradation of humanity.

I think Google wants to double down in the defense contracting business. They’re tired of being “harassed” by antitrust lawsuits and believe that if they just became as prominent as a Lockheed Martin or Boeing or Northrop Grumman, they would gain the leverage needed to stop such lawsuits (or at least get the protection of some members of Congress).

Dolla Dolla Bill Y'all

Don't overthink it—it's simple. Palantir and Anduril have proven that the DoD is more than willing to throw money hand over fist at the new "Tech Bros" rather than traditional contractors like Lockheed and Northrop Grumman. In the early days, Google didn’t have much to offer the DoD. But with the rise of AI and big data, the DoD is all in, and Google now has a real shot at making a fortune. Not to mention, they’re struggling in other business areas due to competition. Add it all up, and they’re ready to cash in on DoD contracts (and all your tax dollars). I mean, if Elon can become the richest man in the world doing it, why not Google?

Well I have seen your prior comments and it seems you have quite the communist views so your message doesn't surprise me at all.

Good analysis. I think everyone is watching Palantir now and thinking how they can cash in too. It's a cash cow for all software companies involved in AI.

I don't care to go into anyone's post history, but in this instance... He's dead on point.

Adapt, or be overrun.
Adapt or be over run is exactly the kind of talk communist leaders give to their citizens....

perhaps this new generation of voters are mostly descendants of immigrants parents from communist countries used to oppression and no freedom of choice, that's the only explanation as the fruit never falls far from the tree.

If we don't enemies will or at least you know who. Then we'll be behind just like how China took over manufacturing from the U.S. in 2010 or at least so. Then we'll say what happened? Military stuff is always a catch 22.

And contractors have bigger profits than the private sector and contractor employees are paid more than regular Government employees doing the same job.

They've always been working on such AI projects, but now they want to make it public too. These military contracts are worth way too much money to pass for them.

It's interesting to see all these tech organisations jumping into Trumps morality-vacuum cesspit - Apple, Google, Meta, obviously everything Musk is involved with, Amazon etc.

But not Microsoft as far as I'm aware... I'm not too keen on Windows these days but Kudos to Satya Nadella for maintaining his dignity and keeping a distance from the freak-show that is Trump, Cook, Bezos, Musk and Pichai.

China must be doing it for years. Let's not pretend it would not.

I find this mind of thinking and bad driven.

You're not going to clone humans or destroy the environment because somebody else will do it before you.

And there should be a Government to protect you from things that you can't as individual.

So being united (with other countries too) and use diplomacy is the best way to protect public's opinion.

Ironically enough, you made my point.

Immigrants of Cuba for example, tend to lean consistently right of center politically due to their exposure to government overreach, and how they never want to experience that.

So no, it's not "new age" - the older voters with life experience in actual government dictatorship know what they're talking about.

Perhaps Google's leaders thought just because we don't do it, others will; so what do we gain by taking a stand? Does that hinder the development of such things? Are there not many who will gladly participate in the development of AI for military applications, just because we don't?

This is reality, sometimes it is not to our liking, but so what? If China & others hostile to freedom are developing such things, we ought to do more than just match them, we ought to be several steps ahead of them. Unlike the hypersonic missiles, which, they were 1st to make!

Unlike fairy tales, ours is a world of compromises. :D

The mindset that brought on WWII was that we do not want to provoke our enemies by preparing for war; thus we were unprepared when it happened!
