Solved Google redirect problem. 8 steps completed

Hi, my internet browser seems to have been hijacked. When trying to follow the links from Google search results, I am redirected to other random websites. I have followed the 8 steps but had a few issues:
- Tried unsuccessfully to go to the Windows Update website, instead received "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" each time
- After performed step 5 (GMER), when I rebooted, my antivirus program (Symantec) for some reason would not let me re-enable realtime protection. I would click on enable, and within seconds it would disable itself. So I freaked and downloaded and installed a new antivirus program (AVIRA, as recommended by TechSpot). After installing AVIRA, I rebooted again, only to find Symantec realtime protection working ok as it should... arggh! So now I have both Symantec and AVIRA... don't know if this is a good or bad thing??

P2P or 'file sharing' Warning:
I notice you are using BitComet and LimeWire.
Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. I suggest that you uninstall BitComet and LimeWire for the following reasons:

• As long as you are using file sharing networks and programs which are from sources that are not documented, you cannot verity that a download is legitimate.
• Malware writers use these program to include malicious content.
• Fie sharing is usually unmonitored and there is a danger that your private files might be accessed.
• The 'sharing' also includes malware that the shared system has on it.
• Files that are illegal can be spread through file sharing.

Hi, thanks heaps for your help.

I have uninstalled Limewire, Bitcomet and AVIRA.

I downloaded and run Combofix but had some problems. The first time it stalled, so I rebooted and tried again. It started scanning the second time, prompted for a reboot partway through due to detecting 'rootkit activity', so system rebooted and it kept going with the scan. Then the system rebooted again, and when it came back up there was no report from Combofix, instead I had a Microsoft Windows error saying the system had recovered from a serious error and asking if I wanted to send a report to Microsoft (I said Don't Send). I clicked to view the technical information about the error and have saved screen shots of the details, but I couldn't attach them because the files are too big.
So in short I still don't have a Combofix report. Should I try and run Combofix again?

Just letting you know I ran Combofix again and received same Windows message about the system recovering from a serious error. So I still don't have a Combofix report to give you..

Windows XP has a helpful tool for finding the reason why functions or features don't work. It's called the Event Viewer. Errors are time coded so I'm going to direct you there to see if there is an Error that corresponds to the time you get the 'serious error' message. You just have to note the time on the computer clock when the message displays and you can force it if you don't remember the time:

I am only interested in Errors happening around the time of the 'serious error' message.

Start> Run> type in eventvwr

Do this on each the System and the Applications logs:

[2]. Look for the Error>
[3] .Right click on the Error> Properties>
[4]. Click on Copy button, top right, below the down arrow >
[5]. Paste here (Ctrl V)

• You can ignore Warnings and Information Events.

Symantec has just started notifying of a new virus found, don't know if it's related to my browser hijack issues. Virus name is Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf and Symantec can't clean or quarantine it, and when I try to delete it through Symantec it says it can't delete it either.

Brian, please do this first: Right click on the icon in the taskbar notification area & select "Disable Symantec EndPoint Protection".

Then Download TDSSKillerhttp://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684. Extract the zipped file to your desktop.

Go to Start ->Run. Type/Copy and Paste the following text into the prompt:

"%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\report.txt -v

• This will have the program write a detailed log
• The screen will resemble this black screen:

• If malicious services or files have been detected, the utility will prompt to reboot the PC in order to complete the disinfection procedure. Please reboot when prompted.
• After reboot, the driver will delete malicious registry keys and files as well as remove itself from the services list..
• You should get a screen like this:

• A log file named report.txt should have been created and saved to the root directory (usually C:\report.txt).
• Follow the prompts and attach the report to your next reply.

When you have finished this, please try Combofix again- even if you have to run it in Safe Mode.
Leave the logs please.

Issues:

1. Okay, so after running the TDSSKiller, you were able to run Combofix.
2. Are you getting the warnings from Norton now?
3. There is one entry in the Combofix report that indicates an flash drive might have been used.
4. Are you or have you been using a flash drive?
5. It can be disinfected, but I don't want you to use it until it is so as not to reinfect the system.

I'd like you to run this script in Combofix. Please be sure to follow Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you has run Combofix in Safe Mode, please see if you can do this now in Normal Mode:

I was going to hve you remove the files in the Recycler- this is where the Recycle Bin sends deleted files, but I notes there are 11 different identification numbers. Each user account has their own ID number- are there 11 users here?

In answer to your questions:
- I'm still getting Symantec notifications for Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf
- Re the flash drive, I have an external hard drive (drive L). I generally only connect it when I need something on it. I'll make sure I don't connect it at all while we're going through this whole process.
- Re the 11 users, there's definately only one user on this machine - me! It's just your usual home PC, so I don't know why there's 11 users showing up.

I ran your custom Combofix script. Tried first in normal mode and it still didn't work, it runs the scan and reboots but then that's it, no report, etc. Ran it again in safe mode and it worked. By the way, each time I ran it, I got a message saying "Current date is 2010-04-29. Combofix has expired. Click 'yes' to run in REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY MODE. Click 'no' to exit".

Also ran ESET. This worked fine but I kept noticing that although I disabled Symantec realtime protection, it kept on re-enabling itself periodically during the scan. So I don't know how this may have affected the scan results.

Combofix has run because it has put malware in quarantine in the Qoobox.
Norton may still be 'reading' malware files that are in System Restore-and/or the Spybot teaTimer (A Resident) is also doing it's thing. We dicided not to have everyone shut down all the residents before running the scans, but I'm beginning to think we need to go back to doing it..

Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted

• Click START> then RUN

I haven't had any more Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf notifications from Symantec, and the Google redirections also seem to have stopped. Am I now clean?! Also could you guide me through cleaning my external hard drive?

Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only.' check each of the following if present:

Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."

Update the Java to v6u20: Check this site for Java Updates Stay current as most updates are for security. Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs

Threat Removal Procedure:

  [1]. Download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your Desktop.
  [2]. After downloading, double-click on Flash_Disinfector to run it.
  [3]. Just follow the prompts and continue until it begin scanning.
  
  
  
  [4]. If asked to insert your flash drive or any removable device including USB Pen Drive and Memory Stick, please do so.
  [5]. It will scan removable drives, wait for the scan to finish. Done.

Let me know if this goes okay and I'll have you remove the cleaning tools and old restore points.

Hi,
All worked as expected. I fixed the four files in HJT, have v6u20 of Java and ran the Flash Disinfector on the external hard drive and it said successful.

Yes! You start a good, clean day!
Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created

• Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
• Click START> then RUN
• Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  
  

• Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
• Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
• Click the CleanUp! button.
• If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
• The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

• You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
• Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
• Click "System Restore".
• Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
• Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  
• Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
  [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
  [*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
  [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
  [*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Since no one has mentioned it or asks, have you cleaned out or checked your Hosts file which is a big cause of redirects?... Nevermind, I just read that you fixed it, haha. But thought i'd suggest..

You're very welcome! Here are some tips to help keep the system clean:

Please follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean and secure:
1.Disable and Enable System Restore: See System Restore Guide This will help you understand what this is, why you need to clean and set restore points and what information is in them.
2.Stay current on updates:

• Visit the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. You should get All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates: Windows XP> SP2, SP3.
• Visit this Adobe Reader site often and make sure you have the most current update. Uninstall any earlier updates as they are vulnerabilities.
• Check this site often.Java Updates Stay current as most updates are for security. Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs.

3.Make Internet Explorer safer. Follow the suggestions HERE This Tutorial will help guide you through Configuring Security Settings, Managing Active X Controls and other safety features.
4.Remove Temporary Internet Files regularly: Use ATF Cleaner by Atribune or TFC
5. Use an AntiVirus Software(only one)

6.Use a good, bi-directional firewall(one software firewall) I recommend either of these software firewalls.- both are free and good:
Comodo or Zone Alarm
7.Consider these programs for Extra Security

• Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX. It places kill bits to stop bad Active X controls from being installed. Remember to update it regularly.
• IE/Spyad This places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts files This replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
• Google Toolbar Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
