Google's new 2 Gig fiber Internet service costs $100 per month

Having been on 1GBPS fiber for a little while now, none of my devices yet have anything faster than gigabit ethernet, so for most it would be wasted. Even then, I have yet to download anything that saturated my bandwidth outside of P2P, as servers will throttle connections to ensure maximum number of concurrent connections- most places I see 350MBPS on a good day. you'd really need like 5 people in your house downloading big files at once to utilize this...

Also, 1.) yes unencrypted DNS is a privacy concern and 2.) yes it is alleviated by recent uptake in DNS over TLS or DNS over HTTPS or VPNs (though really, youre just giving your info to the VPN instead of the ISP unless you're using encrypted DNS there too)

In reality, the amount of resources and shady legality regarding dumping all your DNS queries into profiles matched to your name makes it not worth the risk to a company like Google. Well, thats what I like to pretend anyway. They still have less info about me than someone whos using an Android phone with google services (aka most of the population).

Finally, 3.) Google fiber has 0 added fees and comes with a free TB of cloud storage. $70 a month for 1GBPS and 1TB cloud. thats all. No legal fees or taxes. You can encrypt the data you put there too if you want. I did it for a while and got tired of spending my entire life worried that google would one day publicly cancel me for things I said when I was a teenager online.

Fiber that fast would mean hosting your own server from home would be a dream, granted as long as the data caps arent high or existent lol

Don't kid yourself though, your data is the product or someone else is footing the bill for the actual costs.

LOLl!!

Let me guess, you never left the US (or even your own state) and have no idea what's the internet like in the rest of the world.

Go ahead, ask Europeans, Koreans and the Japanese, etc what speed they have and how much they pay compared to the hen-pecked US consumer!!

I'm Asian and a first generation immigrant who is now proudly American reaping the benefits of Silicon Valley. What's your joke here?

I don't know what the deal is with Google and their half-assed ideas they half-*** implement and then generally scrap. (really? you can have "assed", but as$ is blocked? wow....)

If Google wanted their Stadia to shine, they should have stuck with their 1GB fiber and got it up and running across all major cities and then slowly expanded outwards.

Offering 1GB fiber and then bundle in Stadia with it for a few bucks more.....they would have had something special. Something to take home and show mom how well they've done.

These asshats dropped the ball hard on the 1GB fiber....I wanted 1GB fiber in my area that doesn't require Xfinity's craptastic "contract pricing" crap you need to constantly call in about and get readjusted.

I'm always amazed at how expensive internet and phone contacts are in the US.

Here in France you can get 1Gb/s connection for around €23 (Example ) , sometimes a lot cheaper during special promotions.

Neah, the reason why the costs are so low is because the government invested a lot in the infrastructure and big fiber cables pass through the country. People who work in the IT industry enjoy lower income taxes.
Another reason is the competition is pretty good. Romania is one of the biggest IT centers in the world.

In the US there is no competition and the government can't invest in the infrastructure either since the big ISPs control it.

Here in London it’s around €50 for a 1Gb/s line, we are massively overcharged for everything though and there’s not a huge amount of competition for FTTP lines.

I don't know if I would even benefit from internet this fast. Streaming doesn't require fast internet, gaming is fine on slower connections, stability is what is required. Downloading games would surely be much faster but how many games do you download per day?

I'm on a 1Gbps fiber connection now and while single downloads are fast its more about how many things you can do on the connection at once. Multiple people if you live in a household with other users can hit the connection hard and there is no slow down for others on it.

And once you get use to the stability, low latency, and performance its hard going back to DSL / Cable connections.

Providing proper hardware/technology across swaths of the US is a gigantic undertaking. The US is 9.834 million km² in size where as a place such as France is only 643,801 km².

Any major metro area generally has some kind of 1GB offering, but it usually costs upwards of $100/150/200 a month. As you branch out from the main metro areas higher speeds such as 1GB aren't very common and folks are left with high speed cable (maybe upwards of 250GB) to DSL. When you get out in the rural areas it's generally DSL, satellite or perhaps cell tower connections as your options.

Perhaps part of the high cost has something to do with the land area that needs to be covered and serviced....?
