Help using iMessenger

I have an iphone SE 3rd edition & I'm trying to use imessenger to chat with. My iphone has NO number attached to it, cell & data are off. I use ONLY wifi, can anybody help me? TIA. I've used imessenger on my iphone 6 plus , no problems, please help

As long as you are signed into an iCloud account on that phone, then you should be able to send and receive messages, just like on an iPad that doesn't have LTE, it works fine over WiFi. If you head to Settings -> Messages, make sure that the 'iMessage' toggle is set to on (is green) and then make sure that right underneath that where it says 'Send & Receive' that you have your iMessage account selected as the account to send and receive messages from.

At least that's where I'd start looking.
