HijackThis File - Background and Installation trouble

My problem started with random bouts of pop-ups and a lack of a background. I proceeded to *try* to download an antivirus/spyware program and my computer will not allow me to download anything. Using firefox, it will pull up the download window and ask me if I want to save to disk or use flashgot. When I click save to disk, the window disappears and I'm left with nothing. The background problem is as follows. When I shut down I can see the picture I use as a background, but when my laptop is running all I see is the windows default color. I go into properties to fix it and it won't even let me click on background type, the browse, or the stretch button. Only the color. Now trying to upload a file to put into this message, it will not allow me to browse my computer. I am left with posting the .txt file in this message.
