Japanese automaker Honda this past July announced a partnership with telecom SoftBank in which the two would come together to develop a vehicle capable of holding a conversation with its driver that’s at least partially based on its ability to read the driver’s emotions.

At CES 2017, Honda will showcase the fruits of its labor – an automated concept vehicle it’s calling NeuV.

Honda said in a recent press release that this commuter vehicle will be equipped with artificial intelligence known as the emotion engine which will “create new possibilities for human interaction and new value for customers.” Pretty vague, right?

The Japanese automaker said it also plans to announce initiatives with both startups and global brands that will create a more productive and enjoyable mobility experience. Honda also plans to unveil a concept motorcycle that it says will demonstrate the company’s robotics technology.

Maybe it’s just me but why is it that concept vehicles are made to look so stupid? The only answer I can come up with is that maybe they’re designed to look ugly and out-of-place so they’ll immediately stand out among a sea of otherwise normal vehicles. Then again, Scion xB and Nissan Cube owners probably don’t consider the Honda NeuV to be all that different looking versus what they already own.

Honda’s CES press conference takes place on January 5, 2017, and will feature a keynote address from President and CEO Yoshiyuki Matsumoto.

What is it with Japanese and all the cars they make look like a box?

Talk about trolling, they aren't talking, they are doing it! The rest of the world doesn't want to look like a troll in a box. The car design is supposed to be a piece of art, not packaging. This one is real fugly, and from a distance it looks like a vacuum cleaner.

So rather than base this new technology in a modern-looking vehicle, they pick a Clown Car Concept (CCC) which immediately turns off the discerning buyer.

Let me know when Tesla does it.

Lets make self driving electric vehicles that are efficient in routing, economy and green.... then make them as aerodynamic as a house brick. Good one Honda. I think a piggyback on their Asimo would be a more aerodynamic mode of transport than this.

...or if you aren't into pretentious cubes:

At least they equipped it with over sized "rad" looking wheels and huge drilled disc brakes on all four corners... If this thing is even capable of highway speeds it'll be able to stop on a dime, just don't hit a bump or your spine will explode due to no suspension travel by the looks of it.

Well whaddya know, a half loaf of bread on wheels with an electric motor. It must've taken years for the manufacturer to come up with such an uncommon and innovative shape. Not to mention the cutting edge, wind cheating aerodynamic shape that they spent months in the wind tunnel perfecting. Now that's what I'd call "thinking outside the box"... Excuse the pun.

As a troll I would happily drive this vehicle just to puss you off

I don't know .... saying it looks like a box is really an insult to boxes ........ !!

Arrgh! Please make it go away. Well, the "Hot Wheels" inspired wheels get a tiny Trump-sized thumb up, and these do look like they'd be more at home on some plastic track in you cellar.

C'mon everyone! This is a one-seater commuter vehicle! You can't expect it to look *anything* like a 4 (or 5) passenger sedan. It doesn't have a trunk. It doesn't have a hatchback. It's an electric vehicle, apparently, and doesn't need a hood. This particular car looks quite good for what it is. It seems reasonably aerodynamic, comfortable for the passenger, and stable on the road. I'd be thrilled if they gave me one, and I wouldn't even care about the human interaction stuff.

Vacuum that distance away...
