I got a .PAK file called PAK5.pak from a Quake2 site..... but no
list of the maps contained inside it, So I cant fire up any of the
maps..... I managed to get one to load, only because one of the
articles on the same web page happened to mention the map
name.
Is there a way to list them?
Thanks in advance.

U most proably can get a pak opener or use winzip. I think the file will open as it is, if not make a copy and save it as .zip and u can look at alll the files in the pak.

Tweakster, Thanks for the input.
But Winzip cannot open the Quake2 file.
When you install Quake2, you get a file called PAK0.PAK
this file contains all the maps and other "graphics" that the game
needs. If you know what the maps are called it's easy enough
to get the game to start off in which ever one you choose.
ERASER has a pak file reader..... but I was hoping that I would
not have to install it just to "open" this file...

look up the website for "pocket quake"
the guy who makes it is a real genious and so are all the other people on the fourms..........used to play pocket quake alot back in the day
but yeah you will definately get an answer on how to decompress *.pak files and creating your own
