I need to know which is the best antivirus software,

Hello ae_arauz and welcome to TechSpot!

The best free antivirus programs that I know of are AVG and AntiVir.
Some say that Avast is good too, but I haven't tried it so I can't say.

I`ve moved your thread to the correct forum and retitled it to something more appropriate.

You`re quite right. Norton is a resource hogger.

Here`s what I recommend to keep your system secure. You might also want to take a look at this thread HERE.

AVG free or Avast antivirus programmes.

Zonealarm or Kerio free firewall programmes.

Spybot Search & Destroy.

Ad-Aware se personal.

Spyware Blaster.

AVG Antispyware.

Ccleaner.

Regards Howard :)

Thanks Howard,

I had some problems using AVG firewall. Probably some error on my part.

Are there any compatability issues with your recommendations ?

What order should the various s/w be installed/activated.

I had problems when I installed AVG firewall before my broad band.

Currently i'm using Etrust 7(real time), Spyware Blaster, and occasionally Ad-Aware se Personal.

With the AVG my system became slow and unstable.

Pentium-III (450 MHz), 128 MB ram, Win 98SE, 4.? MB Harddisk.

Thanks,

Ravi Banthia

OOps, that hdd though small, is 4.? GB.

Sorry,

Ravi

I`m not sure what you mean by the AVG firewall?

First, download the programmes you want, then disconnect from the net. Uninstall Norton from add remove programmes in your control panel. You will need to uninstall the live updates as well. If you have any problems uninstalling Norton, take a look at this thread HERE.

Once Norton is completely uninstalled, install whichever firewall programme you chose, followed by whichever antivirus programme you chose and reboot your system the required number of times. Reconnect to the net.

Then, install the rest of the antispyware programme in any order you wish. Please note: When you run AVG Antispyware click the resident shield and change it to inactive.

Regards Howard :)

The Firewall ?

Howard,

By the AVG firewall, I was referring to the AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus plus Firewall - TRIAL.

I think I got it directly from www.grisoft.com (can't remember)
