iexplore.exe using 98% of cpu

Help,

From time to time while surfing the windows task manager indicates that iexplore.exe is using 97-98% cpu resources and my machine starts whirring like nobodys business. The noise stops and the program is not using 97-98% constantly but it starts bouncing from 80-98%.

Whats up with that? That just doesn't seem right I'm not doing that much through iexplorer.
