Installing broadband modem

Hi

I am a newbie and only a home PC user, so please be gentle with me!!

I have had to reformat my hardrive and am trying to reinstal my broadband connection and modem (Alcatel Speedtouch 330).

I have run the installation CD v2.012 and visited the Alcatel's website and downloaded the driver upgrade v3.012.

Both seem to have installed ok (ie I get no error messages and am instructed to plug in modem. However, when I plug in modem Windows XP launches the Hardware Wizard but this does not complete. It errors with 'access is denied'.

On checking device manager it is erroring with code 28 ie saying drivers are not installed.

The modem has only one red light which is flashing and is the USB light.

I have tried all other USB hubs and the same thing happens

I have only a basic knowledge and understanding of PC, but was wondering whether

1) The drivers are not actually installing on PC although no error message to the contrary or

2) whether drivers are installed but modem is not looking in the right place to find them

I have installed, uninstalled, rebooted etc etc and tried all possible permutations and combinations of set-upnothing seems to sort this out.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Is there something which could be stopping the drivers installing? Is there something stopping the modem from identifying the driver?

Please could someone let me know in as plain-speak as poss as I am not an IT guru

Don't mean to be pushy but this is getting urgent as I need to download and install Windows Update and AV software as I am currently running a highly vulnerable system until I can get a broadband connection and protect myself

Looking forward to hearing from you

Cheers

This might mean you don't have the necessary rights to install drivers, or Windows is blocking the install because the driver isn't "digitally signed" (although I don't know if it nags about it in that case). Have you tried logging into the computer as an administrator?

I am an administrator and have all the necessary rights.

The funny thing is, I think I had this problem when I first installed broadband a year ago. PC World were able to talk me through to a box where I either ticked or unticked a box. I can't remember what the box was or how to get there .

Neither PC World, my ISP (pipex) or Alcatel are able to help me any further.

Hence me being stumped!

Are there any other programs running in the backround? Anything down in your task bar on the lower right? Does it come up with any type of screen indicating that it can't find a specific file someplace?

Then it could be driver signing. Check from Control Panel - System - Hardware - Driver Signing that installation of unsigned drivers isn't blocked.

Just posting this as an update and to help anyone who may have this problem in the future...

I have solved my problem....

It seems there is a problem installing an Alcatel modem on a Packard Bell with Freeserve installed. Packard Bell have a patch which can be found here.
http://support.packardbell-europe.com/supp...le/art05044.asp.

Uninstall drivers, download and install patch, instal drivers, plug in modem and hey presto! Problem fixed.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice on this one.

This is probably an unnecessary post...but, in 21 years, I've never known Packard Bell NOT to have a problem of one sort or another.

... LOL !!!

Hi, I'm also having the same problem as Angelica and am now trying to install the fix from Parkard Bell, but when I try to run Freefix.exe I get the error:

Unable to execute file:
c:\windows\system32\regini.exe

CreateProcess failed; code 3.
The system cannot find the path specified

I've check and the regini.exe file is where specified, I've changed the permissions to give everyone full control, reboot a million times, but still the same error.

Any ideas?
