Monitor turns on for a second and turns off

Hello everyone. I have an HP compaq computer with a Samsung SyncMaster 740N monitor. I noticed yesterday the screen was doing something weird. It almost looked like the colors were moving. I turned my computer off and this morning I turn on my computer and the screen pops up for a second and then turns off. I turned my monitor off and on again. The screen comes up, but then turns black. What is the cause? Do I need to get a new monitor?

Check power, VGA and/or appropriate cable used and if your using a PCI/PCI-EX video card try the onboard.

There is a card in the yoke or neck or bottom of the screen of the monitor that needs to be replaced. Hard to get, but look for cracked or damaged monitors on eBay... or Samsung parts by that model
If you disassemble the monitor, you can see the part and get the model number for which you can then search.
We have to buy them in lots of 12... and apparently the Samsung folks would rather sell a new monitor than the part.
Otherwise, a repair shop will charge you too much to make it worth the effort.
We buy up a lot of used failed ones and when we get 20 or 30, we order the parts all at once.
But more and more, the parts are available on ebay.
