New computer not turning on

I just built a new computer today (specs are below), and now when I try to turn it on, the lights flash and the fans start and immediately stop spinning. Then, I have to turn it off and wait a few seconds before I can turn it on again. Can anyone tell me what could cause this sort of problem, and what to do to fix it?

AMD Athlon 64 3000+, socket 939
ATI Radeon 9800Pro
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2 x 512MB DDR SDRAM DDR 400
CHAINTECH S1689 Socket 939 ULi M1689 ATX AMD Motherboard
SAMSUNG SpinPoint P Series IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive
ATRIX CSCI-L8005-C43 ATX Mid Tower Case
400W Power Supply

Hey,Yo u said your com din turn on

:slurp: :slurp: Hav u checked your cables?Power Cables?Does the power, the fan inside move or do u feel the wind?Does the processer fan move? if every thing i stated fails,Your Power IS Damaged or Spoiled!

That sounds like the power supply unit (psu) shot circuit protection causing that to me. You can test the psu by unplugging it and shorting the green wire to any of the black ones. If the psu runs fine like that then you may have a motherboard (mobo) short. You will need to remove the mobo and look for maybe a loose screw in the case or a metal spacer in the wrong place. Let me know how you get on and if you need anymore help. Rik.

I shorted the green wire to some of the other wires in the PSU. The black ones didn't seem to do anything. When I shorted it to the +5V or +12V lines, the fan started going and kept going. Does that mean the PSU's fine and the mobo is the problem? I removed the mobo, put it on a piece of cardboard, connected it to the power supply (and nothing else, except of course the cpu) and turned it on - same problem as before. It turns on and immediately shuts off, no beeps.

Interesting, cause I had the same problem when I build my comp, where it would just turn on then off. If you have two of those 4-pin black power connectors that connect to the motherboard, check that you're using the correct one. You can tell by the shape of the pins. If you connect the wrong one, the computer will do exactly what you described.

Tell me if that does anything

If the psu wont power up when shorted to a black then it is faulty, no question. If u read up on psu's it states that the green wire carries a small voltage and the psu turns on when it detects a drain. Do u kave a spare to test with?

There only seems to be one 4-pin connector from the power supply. I'm going to Best Buy to day to get a replacement psu, and if it turns out the mobo is the problem, i can just return the psu, and get a new mobo (and new thermal paste *mutter*).

Richt, it's not clear to me. Do you have two power supply leads connected to your motherboard? Both a 20 pin and a 4 pin 12vATX connector?

Sorry for the few days with no response. I was away. I've tried replacing the PSU, but it changed nothing. I tried replacing the motherboard, and the problem is still here. Only now, with the new motherboard, the fans don't even start to spin up. Instead, it just gives me an error code of 0.2. (the mobo manual says nothing about what this error means). I got advice from another board to try getting a PSU with at least 20A on the 12V rail, since I'm using an Athlon 64 3000+. Do you guys think that might help? And yes, mailpup, I have a 4 pin and a 20 pin connector both connecting to my motherboard. Does it matter if none of the front panel connectors are attached? Does anyone know what post code 0.2. means, or where I could find out what it means? Could it be that something other than the mobo or psu could cause this sort of problem? A bad cpu, ram or video card, for example?

Any of the components u mentioned could be the cause, also u will need the power switch on the front panel connected. If i were you id get all the components replaced one by one if you can. Also it could be worth powering up the mobo outside of the case to eliminate the possibility of a short, make sure u place it on something non conductive if u try this. U will need to to force the mobo to start like that by shorting the 2 pins that the power switch connects to.

What it sounds like if you have to wait to turn the system back on it most be running hot, what i suggest is to make sure that the fans are coming on and also it could be that the heatsink is not keeping the CPU cool

The power switch on my case only connects to one pin. If the problem were with the ram or gpu, wouldn't I be getting beeps? And how can the system be running hot if it's doesn't even get through POST? Does anyone know what the error code of 0.2. means? I don't see why they bother putting it in if no one knows what it means.

Of a matter of fact a system could recieve beeps if the issue was ram or the CPU, but how would you know unless you try, if you are unable to turn the system back on after it shuts off, and knowing that you have to wait to turn the system back on then the sytsem cooled so it can be turned back on

i have the same problem right now, the difference is that the firts day i used it run OK, it was yesterday when the problem began

can this be the PSU also? does it matter if the psu is only for 400w and the computer needs 500w?

I've now tried two dfifferent motherboards and three different power supplies. None work. Can someone PLEASE tell me what an error code of 0.2. means on an ABIT motherboard? Pretty please? It cannot be overheating, because the computer only flickers on for an immeasurably short period of time.

I just said... I've tried 3 different power supplies. You can't possibly think that all three were defective.... Does no one know what the error code means?

Something seems wrong with that code. The ABIT site doesn't seem to list that particular code. Perhaps you can check it again. Check this link: ABIT post codes
