Question on merging installs

Hello,

Currently I am having some issues with my PC. It was / is having issues with malware, and when said malware was removed it has left my windows crippled. Windows wouldn't even boot before, but I finally managed to get it to boot by installing a second copy of windows and using the hive to fix the registry settings manually.

Now, my question is this...

Can I somehow .. move either my good install files, to overwrite my broken ones, or my file structure (games, programs, etc) to the good windows install and remove the bad windows install afterwards?

I ask, because formatting is not an option - I might have access to a windows 7 cd, but I'm pretty sure you can't upgrade from xp pro 64 to windows 7 64 (thanks microsoft!).

Not sure what kinda funky CD I have or what the issue is, but I can't do a recovery install from booting with the CD - I also tried to do a "upgrade" install from inside windows while it was running - got to the coping files part and just as it was about to reboot to start installing - it tells me it is missing a file "arbtpk6m.sys" which gets ZERO hits on google so I just have no idea what to do.

Looking for some way to frankenstein these installs to get 1 good working install again, without losing anything.

If you still have your Windows XP Professional 64bit OEM CD, you can boot to that CD and run a "repair" install.

Back up your data first.

In most cases, this will give you the opportunity to restore Windows without harming any of your other software. You will have to reinstall service packs and Microsoft Updates using Windows Update.

You can read more in detail from a good Windows book or a Gurgle search.

actually I couldn't run a repair - there was no "R" option given to me.

Moot now, I formatted and upgraded to win7 ultimate

was almost 200 gigs of data to back up + lost loads more - but at least everything works now.
