i have 2 computers a linksys router and a cable modem any way i can make the second computer to have interent

when i connect the chord from the router port to the port on the hard drive it says i need an active network adapter

right click MY Computer->Manage->Device Manager

click Network Adapters
NONE should have yellow or red flags; update the drivers if you do.
Right Click on each->Properties and ensure it is ENABLED (at the bottom).

my cable modem only hast 1 port doesnt it need 2 casue i plug the chord into the router that says internet on it from the cable modem

right. the modem has one port and it goes to the router WAN port (usually on the end).
the systems are plugged into the LAN ports.

does it matter what chord you plug in or what

both connections are made with ethernet patch cords with RJ45 connectors on both ends. these are standard cables, not crossover cables.
