Samsung is hoarding the supply of Snapdragon 835 SoCs for its Galaxy S8

Qualcomm’s new flagship Snapdragon 835 SoC is set to bring many improvements to high-end smartphones this year. It’s said to be 30% smaller than the Snapdragon 820, packs up to 27% better performance with up to 40% less power consumption than "the previous generation,” and with Quick Charge 4.0 it will reportedly allow users to gain "five hours of battery life" from five minutes of charging.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see any Snapdragon 835-powered phones at Mobile World Congress next month, however, as Samsung is reportedly getting first dibs on the chip for the upcoming Galaxy S8 and for the first time in years, the company doesn’t plan on unveiling the flagship at the show.

According to Forbes, the Galaxy S8 will be officially launched on April 14 and no other Android flagship released before will carry the Snapdragon 835. Both the LG G6 and HTC U Ultra are expected to ship with last year’s admittedly still very powerful Snapdragon 821.

Beyond getting ‘first dibs’ the reports indicate that Samsung is essentially hoarding all or most of the initial supply for the next-generation chip so it may be a while until competitors have access to it. The Verge was able to separately confirm with two different manufacturers that the Snapdragon 835 is indeed unavailable to them, and speculates that the summer might be a busy time for the launch of smartphones with the latest and greatest Qualcomm silicon once it becomes widely available.

Is it possible that Samsung just ordered a sh*tton more then Qualcomm can produce at the moment? If so, that is not Samsung fault.

Even if it's not illegal it's still shady business from both Qualcomm and Samsung. This means that Samsung will have a huge lead over the competition because they have a "temporary monopoly" over the supply of the chips. In general there should have been a split with samsung getting the biggest piece of the pie, not all of the pie.

Yeah, this chipset is a huge part of my next want list. My LG G4 will have to last a bit longer.

It really is a bummer. I'm running a G4 myself, and while it's still adequate, I can feel it becoming much less relevant compared to the next generation.

It's still a relevant and very capable device but your problem is all psychological... it's called "the upgrade itch" and there is only one known, albeit temporary cure for it. I suffer sporadically from the same disease myself along with millions of others I guess.

So what do they intend doing with all those chips? Try close out the competition altogether? That can never happen. Consider the fact that more S8's will be sold with Exynos chips worldwide than the SD which will is usually only available in North American and some European markets, unless they're not going to bother with their own silicon this time around and ship 'em all with SD's instead.

I say it's worse than that. Its spoiled rotten syndrome. The parents should have started him out on this instead so he would appreciate what he has.

I'm fairly confident we all purchase our own devices and equipment here.
Yep. Sadly, I'm too old to have ever had my parents buy me a cell phone. But hey, keep trashing people on a tech site for wanting newer tech, BigFatClown! You're the best!

It was meant to be a joke really. I'm always wanting newer and better technology as much as the next person. So, my comment would be like the pot calling the kettle black. :)
