Samsung loses top European phone vendor crown to Xiaomi

Why it matters: While Samsung is the biggest phone vendor in the world, it is no longer the top seller in Europe. One might expect the title to have passed to Apple, but that’s not the case—Chinese giant Xiaomi now holds the honor of being number one on the continent.

According to Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi shipped a record 12.7 million smartphone units in Europe during the second quarter, giving it a market share of 25.3%. Second-place Samsung, meanwhile, managed 12 million shipments for a 24% share.

Xiaomi saw its YoY growth in Europe hit an impressive 67.1% compared to the same period a year earlier, while Samsung’s fell -7%. The other two Chinese firms also saw a huge uptick in shipments: fourth place Oppo was up 180% YoY, and Realme saw a stunning 1800% increase, though both only managed to grab small percentages of the market share—5.6% and 3.8%, respectively.

Boris Metodiev, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, said that “Xiaomi has seen great success in Russia, Ukraine, Spain and Italy among others and found customers eager for its Mi and Redmi series of feature rich, value smartphones.”

It’s likely that Xiaomi’s growth was helped by the demise of Huawei in Europe and LG’s exit from the phone market. A recent report showed that the latter’s decision to stop making phones had left a void in the US market that’s being filled by OnePlus, Motorola, and Nokia HMD.

The post-Covid recovery has seen overall smartphone shipments hit 50.1 million in Europe, up 14.4% YoY. However, Quarter-to-Quarter growth decline by -15% from 59.1 million shipments in Q1 2021.

It’s been a fantastic few weeks for Xiaomi; not only is it now Europe’s biggest phone vendor, but it also knocked Apple off its number two spot in the global rankings last month.

Yeah for cheap phones. If we look at revenue and profit, guess who comes out at top.

If you look at this as a consumer rather than a share holder / investor, I personally prefer the company that offers me the same for less money which, yes, will lead to lower profits.

It still amazes me how many think companies‘ obscene profits are a good thing. Where do you think that money comes from ?

Where do you think Xiaomi's cheapness comes from? Have fun selling your data to the Chinese.

I will avoid/reduce Chinese products where I can to protest China's bullying of Taiwan and other small countries. So I just might buy my first Samsung device in 15+ years on my next purchase. Sure some parts will come from China - but fewer hopefully than a Chinese brand.

That assumes I have any reason to trust non-Chinese brands (the majority of which have their devices made in - China) in the first place. I could pretend that everything I do is not already seen by five eyes, so what‘s one eye more ?

Also, their products are not cheap, mind you, just more reasonably priced. I doubt they are losing money, just missing the magic mark-up that‘s added when Western products leave their Chinese factories.

Note that Samsung seems to be a very notable exception here.

Not surprised at this, Samsung offers the same sort of experience as Xiaomi or Huawei etc but they charge more for it. Phones are now more defined by their software than their hardware and these all run variations of the same software. The only real alternative is iOS. It’s a shame because Android is garbage, there’s definitely room for competition.

Its called Research and Development costs. Generally speaking, Chinese companies tend to steal IP and thus reducing overall costs.

My Xiaomi makes every phone I had in the past look like a really bad joke and a complete waste of money.

They also innovate more than most.

Yeah it's just that they don't offer the same - hence the price and re-sale value.

Those cheap Android phones has been pure garbage for me. Wonky performance, wonky updates and tons of software issues and missspellings in general. You get what you pay for and re-sale value is pretty much nothing, because it's trashbinworthy after 2 years. Had a few Huawei and 1x Honor and 1x Xiami. All garbage. Luckily workphones.

Utter terrible support. Most of these cheap android handsets does not even get 1 year of support, even tho they are riddled with bugs. They will rather sell you a new cheap PoS device after 1 year than make the first one work like its supposed to.

Go ahead tho, keep using that cheap garbage. Not for me. Could not care less.
I pick and choose, company pays.

Please….the wording. That really screams Wccftech.

Just got rid of my OnePlus 7T for a Samsung phone. OnePlus got too expensive, not the bargain it was, plus now they are 100% honest by "merging" with Oppo. Screw the CCP.

I remember a friend of mine that wiped his Oneplus because he typed the password wrong 10 times, while it was in his pocket ... Haha .. Thats what you get with these cheap phones.

Even the CEO's of these companies uses iPhone or Samsung themselves :joy:

Samsung's CEO put Apple devices on the desk when he was searched at the airport ... Thats good marketing :joy:

Life is simply too short for cheap asian knockoffs full of bugs and typo's everywhere in the OS. I pick and choose anyway. Company pays all my devices like phone, tablet and notebook. I could not care less about these cheap phones, they are cheap for a reason but knock yourself out.

Only decent Android phones I have tried was Pixel lineup and Samsung flagships and these get 2+ years of support too, unlike 99.9% of other androids, which barely get a year. They often don't even get security updates after first year .. haha
