Take-Two admits PC is more important than ever but still won't confirm GTA 6 release date

TL;DR: The Grand Theft Auto series has historically been a money-printing machine on consoles and PCs. Publisher Take-Two Interactive wants all the money it can grab, so it is committed to launching GTA 6 on all platforms. However, it is targeting a non-simultaneous release of GTA 6 on platforms and still hasn't hinted at a date.

Take-Two and Rockstar are working hard to bring GTA 6 to consoles by this fall, but neither company has said anything about a PC release. The eagerly awaited new chapter in the GTA saga will eventually come to computers. Take-Two chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick almost teased as much in a recent interview.

However, in a recent interview, Zelnick said that executing a simultaneous release on all platforms is challenging. The Take-Two boss referred to the recently launched Civilization 7, which is already available on all gaming systems, including PC and consoles. However, Rockstar is known for starting with a specific platform and releasing its games on other systems later.

Grand Theft Auto 5 launched on consoles in September 2013. It wasn't until two years later that the PC version arrived, despite being initially scheduled for a simultaneous release. Zelnick highlighted the importance of the PC market for Take-Two, which now generates over 40 percent of the overall sales for multiplatform games.

"We have seen PC become a much more … important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue," the exec said.

This observation is reflected in Sony's recent branch into releasing PlayStation exclusives on PC.

Zelnick expects console sales to do well and keep bringing new generations of gamers into the market despite the threat of US tariffs potentially bringing the entire technology business to a screeching halt.

Grand Theft Auto games are sure-fire system sellers. Fans gamers will readily fork over big money for the newest hardware to play the over-the-top crime fantasy title with next-gen graphics. Zelnick doesn't think tariffs will significantly impact console sales because many other developers have exciting titles competing with GTA 6 in 2025.

Take-Two is not concerned with console sales falling over a cliff, and the conditions for PC sales are about the same. Many gamers are planning to upgrade to the newest powerful GPUs to roam GTA 6's fictional Florida, "Leonida," even though next-gen GPUs are tough to purchase thanks to scalpers and Nvidia's paper launch tactics.

It'll probably be easier for Take Two to address issues with a console-first release, given the limited number of hardware configurations. Also, it took Take Two nearly 19 months to release GTA 5 to PC, so this isn't new for them.

Deffinitely right about want all the money they can get. They know they can get more selling it to those who cannot wait on console knowing that many will repurchase on PC later. And they will advertis eit as revamped graphics just like they did with GTAV so more will run and buy it. They know what they are doing. Be interesting with all their new stuff like dynamic A.Is to see how it will run on consoles. I'll be waiting to buy on PC and probably on a discunt sale since they make us wait.

They also likely rake in cash from console-makers asking them to wait with the PC-release as it helps them sell next-gen consoles and accessories.

Since the game won’t be out on PC for months at least (probably over a year or 2), this is simple nonsense… 5000 level GPUs will be plentiful by then - there might even be 6000 level GPUs out by then!

They're smart for not releasing a date. With a big game, a public deadline will tend to either have lots of issues upon release or be postponed. In Cyberpunk 2077's case, it was delayed three times and still had loads of issues.
Sure, but it doesnt mean the PC will be good at day 1... even if its released later. So many PCs out there, so many bugs to be found. Different configurations have different bugs. So not only we will wait 1-2 more years, but add on top of that at least 1 more for a bug free experience. Dont defend Rockstar, they suck. I wont double dip, all my friends dont either. If anything, this delaying BS makes me forget about the game and hype and I MIGHT get it when its like 20 bucks. Im willing to spend 70 on day 1 or 20 after 5 years. Guess what makes more money. Same for my friends, they even forgot GTA 5 exist LOL. Delaying is not always ideal.

It's how I'd do it. Consoles first because you're only targeting a couple of configurations. Once you've got a rock solid, user tested base you go after the PC release. That's always the biggest issue with PC games, you're looking at possible configurations in maybe the thousands. It's also IMHO one of the main reasons that PC versions are so heavily criticized for being "unoptimized" when ported to the PC.

It would be interesting to know the true reason they do not do PC on start.
If it is piracy, then it does not even make sense. vast majority of people will
want to play online. There, a natural protection.
And if that is not enough, they could just slap denuvo on top.
I am guessing, they actually do like to make it this way, have done for a long time, and
have most people who want to do it this way.

TakeTwo has figured out that the PC gamer space is where it's most important audience is. They just don't know what to do about it.
