Why it matters: If you're a kid of the 1980s pining for those glorious 8-bit days, Atari's got another blast from the past lined up for you. The iconic gaming brand just announced the Atari 7800+, a modern remake of its 1986 console. This comes after a refreshed Atari 2600+ was rolled out last year, which the 7800+ now aims to one-up with some fresh tweaks and upgrades.

For the unfamiliar, the original Atari 7800 landed just a few years after the video game crash of 1983. Atari mandated that developers submit games for approval to avoid another deluge of crummy titles.

It was a noble effort, but the 7800 arrived the same year as the Nintendo Entertainment System, which promptly stole its thunder with a certain pioneering platformer named Mario, among other titles.

This new 7800+ is a compact reboot with a sleeker and more modern design. It's built to easily connect to modern TVs and displays via HDMI and supports both widescreen as well as 4:3 aspect ratio for that perfect retro experience.

It'll play original 7800 cartridges and those designed for the 2600, containing both original and third-party titles. It also includes a USB-C charging cable, though you'll need to bring your own power brick.

The console is priced at $129.99 and comes packaged with one wireless CX78+ gamepad and a new adventure game called Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest – a sequel to the classic Crystal Castles.

Nostalgic fans can look forward to 10 other new game cartridge releases, too, including Asteroids Deluxe and the Epyx Games Collection with throwbacks such as Summer Games.

The included wireless gamepad provides the classic two-button control setup in a compact form factor. But folks can also purchase more separately, along with a CX40+ wireless joystick, both for $35 as add-ons.

The CX40+ wireless joystick replicates the original controllers with its familiar stick and single button. Both wireless controllers are compatible with the new 7800+, the 2600+, and even vintage Atari hardware.

Alternatively, you can preorder the Atari 7800+ Mega Bundle for $170, which shaves $30 off the original $200 price tag. This bundle also includes the CX40+ joystick and CX30+ Paddle Pack.

Yay! Something I can buy that I can play on my MAME arcade machine. **** games from the 80's ? Hey I know! Make a new Commodore 64 or ZX Spectrum.

Have you ever tried to play ZX Spectrum Jetpac on an arcade machine using joysticks ? You should try it! I got through so many more levels than using the rubber keys. It's just more natural.

Another overpriced ancient piece of garbage that about 5 people will buy for "nostalgia". Those people will play it for a couple of hours and then either return it or it will collect dust in perpetuity.

They want $130 for hardware that literally costs 50 cents to manufacture now. Wow, it has HDMI and wireless controllers! Who cares? The original Atari 7800 had two resolutions: 160x240 or 320x240 and could display a maximum of 25 colors out of 256. It's going to look amazing on your 60" or bigger 4K HDTV!

$129 to play 8-bit Atari game titles? Hard pass. If it came with a bundle of built-in games maybe, but the ROMs are easy to locate online and the emulators for this device were perfected long ago. Too niche.
