Understanding teen gaming: The positive, negative, and complex realities

The big picture: Debate persists about the influence of video games on youth. Some argue that gaming exposes teens to violence and can hinder their development, while others contend that it fosters essential skills such as problem-solving and teamwork. Rather than consult another so-called expert, Pew Research Center went straight to the source for opinions.

The think tank recently surveyed 1,423 US teens between the ages of 13 and 17 about their video game habits, and came away with some interesting findings.

Survey results reveal that 85 percent of teens play games, and that 41 percent report playing at least once daily – yet only four in 10 self-identify as a "gamer." Notably, teen boys are far more likely to identify as gamers than girls. Most – 79 percent – say they play games on a dedicated console, although smartphones and desktop / laptop computers are also popular choices.

As for why teens game, nearly three out of four – 72 percent – said they play to spend time with others. Of those surveyed, 47 percent said they've made at least one friend playing games online.

More than half of the teens polled said games have helped build their problem-solving skills, although 41 percent also believe gaming has had an adverse impact on their sleep.

The negativity doesn't end there. Four out of five teens said video game-related harassment is a problem for their peers, and 41 percent said they have been called an offensive name during a gaming session. Additionally, 12 percent said they've been physically threatened, while eight percent said they've received unwanted sexually explicit material.

Unsurprisingly, most – 58 percent – feel they are playing just the right amount of games. That is far fewer than the 13 percent that believe they aren't playing enough or the 14 percent that feel they're gaming too often. That said, nearly four out of 10 teens said they have reined in the amount of time they spend playing games.

"Some argue that gaming exposes teens to violence and can hinder their development..." Unlike TV or movies, right?

I've been hearing the "gaming makes teens violent" spiel since Zork came out in 1977. Although that theory has been disproved in every study made. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of people out there who think video games are the devil's work. 🙄

They're looking for something to lay the blame on for one thing or another and are focused on the answer being video games before the facts have been looked at.
There will always be people that want to blame an incident on this hobby or that hobby. Usually something that's popular and they don't understand or don't partake in themselves. They want to say aha, this is because of this or that or the other.
Back in the 1980's in the UK it was 'video nasties', or horror videos on VHS tapes people hired out. Then the focus turned to video games, with Doom in particular being singled out.
Video games are a harmless fantasy for most ordinary people. Some people are of course just unhinged, and would do harm to someone else, even if there was no such thing as video games or 'video nasties'. It's as simple as that.
Didn't kids used to play cowboys and indians or wargames back in the 1950's 60's and 70's? I know we did when we were around 7 or 8 years old. It's a wonder someone didn't try and ban roy rodgers or john wayne back in the day too.

The biggest threat to kids is not gaming but loneliness. And I do not even mean the kids that don't have friends at all. Those that hardly ever see other specimens of their kind and socialize online fall into this category.
Human beings require social interactions for good mental health. A plant is going to die in a dark room. A human without interaction wont, but it won't stay healthy either.
And then immediately lack of physical activities next.
People often do not know that physical activity is
even more crucial for the mind than the body.
Kids do not be shielded from violence in games,
they need to be protected from growing up
broken in their heads, limiting their opportunities
and taking away their happiness.

Dude.

Running over innocent pedestrians (deliberately and with malice) with your automobile was literally unknown prior to GTA.

Moral Panics and Outrages are basically the bread and butter of a generation. Throw some "think of the children" on top and you have the perfect cudgel to beat everyone else down with to get your agenda enacted.

Rock, then Rap, then Videogames, then sugar candy in vials, wearing the wrong color shirt... always something to panic about!

As a parent, both of my kids get an hour on the weekend (plus an hour during the week when they're on break) to play single player or couch co-op (no online) videogames. Some violence/profanity/scantily clad ladies are ok but no gore is allowed.

I don't buy into videogames warping their (already pretty warped just because they're kids and got no mental breaks) minds, but I also don't want them whiling their life away in front of a TV screen when there is so much world to experience as well.

If they want to crash and play some Helldivers 12 or whatever after work when they're functional adults, that's their business.

None of these stats mean anything unless compared to something... which they haven't been...

Half of the teens were called an offensive name while gaming... great...

What's the percentage of teens who are called an offensive name while doing anything else other than gaming?

Until we know that answer (I'm guessing it's probably the same or higher), the stat is completely meaningless.

After all... 100% of people who eat salad are going to die....

My little niece is "forcing" me to play Genshin Impact, because she says her friends don't like playing this kind of games on-line.

I usually play Elden Ring, DOOM Eternal, and the hardest PC/arcade retrogames you can imagine. I hate multiplayer within the core of my soul. So my niece is harassing me here :-D

They'll really keep reaching for ANY excuse for their bad parenting. So much easier to embrace the cult of "safteyism" and blame "dangerous" meanie words instead of admitting you screwed up raising your children.

I was doing it all the time in Carmageddon months prior and you got style points for doing it in creative ways. While the graphics were pretty basic by comparison, driving over pedestrians in video games has been a thing since Death Race in the 70s.

Please let us all know as soon as you have 3rd-party verifiable proof that playing GTA caused players to go out and do that in real life, m'kay?

Pretty sure that was sarcasm here... I didn't have to think too hard to remember that dude crushing scene from the movie Christine in '83.

Gaming is fine. Being a gamer is fine and getting called an "offensive" name doesn't make the caller a bad person. Over doing anything is bad for development

Most important thing was left out in the article and user comments: the golden age of gaming was pre multiplayer/online times
